Got this e-mail last night and thought i would pass it on as i think he's on to something.....................
We are hitting 123.9 a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying 2.00 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP.
If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!
Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..
THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt,
all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8days!!! Acting together we can make a difference . If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.
PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso

This has been going around for quite a while now -- judging by BP's profits, it isn't having the desired effect!

All very well, but at a local garage diesels in the high 120's, but 2 miles up the road the customers can save about 4p a litre. Why do people still go to the higher priced garages. I am sure if people avoided the high price garages then prices would HAVE to come down or they would have to close! >:(

all what happens is the non esso bp stations jack the price up and we all get fleeced anyway. THe only way to get the fuel prices down is to get the goverment to reduce the duty but I'll think your have to wait until Labour commit political suicide at the next general election.

The same place as all the others basically Albitz, but the supermarket sell it cheaper to entice customers to their main store to buy the produce they really want to sell you at full margin. In other words their 'cheaper' ( and it generally is not as cheap now compared to other filling stations) fuel is a loss leader to sell their main full margin products. ;)

Indeed Martin, It is the Government who are maintaining the higher price of petrol as they have squandered all the reserve cash over successive years of Budgets to cover their short term, vote gaining, policies, and have no latitude to make the cuts really required without taking money away from Education, Health, The Armed Forces, etc. :'(

We can only hope that the Conservatives by then will be able to find some way to reduce the fuel taxes without cutting services, in a global economy that is going to be very difficult indeed for some time to come. :'( :'( :'(

i was thinking that its quite possible they buy from esso/bp,so we could be avoiding esso/bp garages and going to supermarkets instead,but still buying from them anyway which would make it a bit pointless. :-/

My car runs noticably better on branded fuel than on supermarket fuel.
If you remember it was only supermarket fuel that caused problems with the lambda sensors with silicone contamination.

I read somewhere that Tesco owns a 30% stake in one of the smaller oil companies.

I always buy from branded companies, due to things like the above.

The tesco caper wasn't caused by the fuel it's self it was with the tankers and what they had carried before. Petrol is petrol period. THe only difference is what is added and it's normaly added at depot by the tanker driver for which ever firm he's hauling for that day.

These chain emails (and thats all it is, nothing to do with any attempt to reduce prices, simply an email harvesting technique) go round every 3 months or so.
Even if it was genuine, it won't make sod all difference - these companies make very little at the pumps.

Someone had to say this so as a dumb newbie I'll take up the challenge....LPG now has to be a no-brainer. Currently I get about 15 full tanks of LPG before I need to top up the petrol. Apparently if you have the space for the sort of tank that you would have if you can't get mains gas then it is about 40p per litre for LPG in bulk although you have to be careful about paying the extra duty for any 'road-use' litres.
Commercial upgrades are in the £1500-£1800 range and at about 50p per litre difference on the forecourt then 4,000 litres pays for it.
Don't know what you guys(gals) are getting per litre but I'm in the 6-7 miles per litre range (when not going for it) so 25,000 miles payback
