Just realised I am £30 below my overdraft limit, and I have my car ins DD going out tomorrow for £60! Agh!
Now, I've plenty of money in another account. If I go to the bank first thing, and pay in cash - will I be seen as going "over my limit" or incur charges, if I pay the cash in the same day the DD comes out? :-/
-
I fear you have already been charged once and will get charged again unless you get the money in before the DD goes out. Some DD are in the day others at night, its a pain!
-
Most bank "reconcile" their accounts once a day .. in the early hours. If you have internet/phone banking and you do an electronic transfer from one account to the other NOW, it'll probably be "in" your account by tomorrow, but the DD won't "leave" until the next reconciliation ... so you MIGHT escape charges .. ??
This will only work if the accounts are with the same bank .. savings account to current account sort of thing
Only a thought .. not a guarantee .. :(
-
No way of getting it in, until bank opens :(

What you COULD try .. in first thing ... explain to cashier that you had to go overdrawn and couldn't get in to pay due to bank holiday, pay the money in and request reduction of charges as you had no options....
If you don't ask you don't get .... ??

Usually the bank will charge you a 'penalty' charge for having "insufficient funds to cover the DD". However, if you go in tomorrow and explain that you have made an honest mistake, and you have more than enough funds in another account they may give you a refund.
However, this is never guaranteed of course with banks in the mood they are, and as I have bitter experience of with Abbey National you may have to protest quite loadly to obtain the refund. Indeed with them I had to call their main centre to obtain any refunds as the branch was "not authorized" to do so. :'( :'(
As a matter of interest I secured a £2,000 settlement for "Penalty Charges" from the said bank after I sent my own 'legal' letters to them and took them to the small claims court, where in the end they backed down and paid me in full my claim before the hearing. ;D :y
I trust your small mistake will be sypathetically dealt with James. :y
PS my banks appear to 'balance' debits / credits electronically at midnight as the DD / SO is scheduled to leave your account. Insufficient funds at this moment will result in a charge.

I also think it may depend on the bank as well.
-
I suspect they will charge, I would !
Or at least the bank i used to work for would have.... :(

You can argue at worst case - they will listen - especialy if you threaten to leave

It's a pittance - I've enough in cash to pay it off... I may just do that, and use my Barclays account. I've had nothing but bad service from Nationwide.

Go on then there are still some good deals out there - where are you going to go first for a mortgage?
-
A&L seem to be quite good - I may move there - currently with Halifax and I do play them hard at times.
Avoid MBNA for ANY financial product - a bunch of crooks!

Do bears s**t in the woods?
Theyre a bank, course the robbing barstewards will try to extract their pound of flesh at any opportunity.

That wont make a blind bit of difference.
Since the banks have paid out so much in bank charge refunds they wont give a monkies, they will just take every chance to recoup losses and increase profits.
I think at times the attitude had become US V THEM
and invariably they have the bigger chance of winning.

My virgin credit card is administered by MBNA ( Merchant Bank of North America). No probs so far.

I reckon they'll charge you. Most banks do thier debits before thier credits @ the start of each days trading because it works in thier favour. I bank with NW. Looked online one evening & realized i was a few quid short of a DD the next day, my mistake. I had cash so phoned the 0845 no. (they pretend not to make money from that as well) ...yeah really... & asked if i paid cash in an envelope with a paying in slip that night so they got it first thing next day could i avoid charges? BIG BLATENT NO. we'll charge you anyway.
Next inheritance, NW won't see a brass farthing of it. >:(

i have had the same situation myself, with halifax, i went into them the next avalible day and i, what can only be discribed as kissed the bank managers feet, worked and took the charge off
-
Hats off to the Halifax
They are the only bank that I have ever heard of as being leanient.

pay cash into your account first thing tomorrow, any other method will take a lot longer to go through the system :y

I have currently got an outstanding claim with Barclays for £3000+ of charges, which were 90% caused by a genuine mistake which put me £150 OD and when I asked for a temp OD increase the computer said no!! This then spiralled into approx £2500 worth of charges over the following year... They verbally agreed to settle it before my court date, then just 2 days before they were going to make the offer all cases got stayed for the trial case, which is dragging on and on!! >:( >:( >:( >:(
Anyway... If you ask nicely then the bank may refund any recent charges as a "goodwill" gesture. You will only know if you ask, and ask someone with some authority!!! ;) ;) ;)
As for good banks, I have an account with A & L which is very good. They also appear to be run by humans, not computers, and have agreed that when I switch my accounts from Barclays they will look at the way the account is run, for a couple of months, and then upgrade to the premier account. I'll be switching just as soon as I have enough in both accounts to cover any DD that may transfer before wages/funds.
All I can say is.... Be nice and polite, cross fingers and good luck!!

Basically you'r stuffed, transfers occur at midnight, or whenever they choose so as to make the most money. However the unfair Bank charges thing hasn't yet been finalised ( they are going to get hit for huge amounts and are trying to stay execution as long as poss), so if you get hit, you can always claim back afterwards. As well to have a "parachute Account" set up with an alternative bank, in case they try the old "we are going to ask you to close your account" trick, and you can say, "yes, OK, Up yours!". I have been with Natwest, and they have been, shall we say "unhelpful" to my situation, which has cost me a lot. Never mind, sh1t has a habit of sticking. Don't be put down by these people, they are after free use of your money, and if you move, they loose. Also a lot of it is bluff. One of my Companies was fined by the Tax Man, unfairly. I wrote letters only to get the same stupid reply, I took it to the Tax Commisioners and won, which saved £500. The Tax Man (or Women !) is a human being, but is constrained by a crap system to think and respond in a certain way. When it reaches a normal human being, the stupidities become apparent, and the time wasting is dumped.
Did you go to your Bank to try and sort this out ?. Thing is if you did, you could legitimately charge mileage to/from them at 40p/mile, that is the accepted Tax Rate for mileage, which could make their punitive £30 fine look silly.
(this is prob the most sensible thing I have said for a while!!!) Nill illigitamus non tatum carborundum (don't let the b*stards grind you down!)

I hate to say it, but I think that whether you get penalised or not depends very much on how you manage your account. Despite being permanently broke, I take very great care to ensure that when an "accident" is looming, I let the bank know in advance. Same goes for credit cards. Tell them you've blundered, ask them not to penalise you and mostly they will let you off.
Of course, this won't work if you do it every month, but once or twice a year seems to be OK. :)
Except for MBNA. Those people kept advancing the date my card payment was due. In half a year, it moved by 10 days! I kept getting fined, so I paid off the card - transferred the balance, actually - and stopped using the card. They deserve the collective noun for bankers - they're a right wunch. >:(

i have one golden rule re banking,i DONT support any company that has contact centres outside uk.
