I love my mig. We all do. It's why we're here.
It's comfortable, fast, very spacious, lots of toys, & handles well, it's why I'm on my fourth.
However, due to some recent ECU issues I've had the "pleasure" of an Insignia (not worthy of the Elite badge), an Astra (same inside, just shorter), and something called a Nissan "Juke" (more toys than Argos but bugger-all space or balls).
Even when driving all of the above like a 17 year old (for testing purposes, obviously ::)), they all returned 45mpg or better (diesel obviously). Now I know they were all '61 or newer, but having done some scary maths, I could save over £100 a month if I owned something diesel at even 35mpg instead of my 3.2 V6 at 24mpg :(
So, it has to go :'(
However I tend not to spend more than £1000 on a car, if it lasts 2 years & I get £250 back then I'm happy. I obviously can't afford a new car, I'm looking to spend around £1500, but I need the following (in no order of preference):
Lots of space
Lots of toys
Less than 9 seconds to 60/62mph
Comfortable
Automatic
At least 35mpg
Preferably not an estate (but could be persuaded)
Looks like I want a Mig Elite with much better fuel economy, and no, I can't lose the space for an LPG tank.
Best I can find so far is a Volvo V70 D5 (yes, an estate & slightly more than £1500), but has anyone any other ideas?
-
Is be looking at a e39 523 / 528 myself around a 2001 ish although not great mpg or possibly a passat around the 02 plate mark.
-
V70 D5 is probably the best idea you could've come up with, they're brilliant :y.
-
How about another Omega...

0-62 is slow, Maybe they can be chipped/Remapped :-\
-
Diesel Merc, E or C class estate. :y
-
Sorry didn't think, You said had to be Auto that's ruled the 2.2DTi out then :-[
Not to everyone's taste, Still maybe worth considering Vectra C 3.0 V6 CDTi Link (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201308208399021)
Cheapish, 0-62 under 9 Seconds, Available with Automatic, MPG seems to be around your area, Not very comfy though worth a test drive see how you like it, Not bad on space. Fair few toys on Elite.

their production stopped at 2000 and personally I wouldnt recommend a 14 years old bimmer.. 528 earlier models had too much problems.. corrected nearly to the end of production .. IIRC 2000 models have dual vanos unit.. but 530 better than all and have enough power for that weight..
-
Volvo S80: Huge cars, Comfy (test drove one a few months back), Plenty of space, Automatic, 0-62 on the 2.4 D5 around 10 seconds, Cheap, They seem to be well equipped well not bad. MPG seems to be around 35-40. Personally it felt too big and like a boat on the road could have been a bad example mind. Link (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201309258951693)

Consider it sold. :y ;D ;D

I wondered if anyone would spot that, mighta fuessed it would be you Al....although I seem to remember you don't have the space for another?? ;-)
S80, forgot about those, not a bad shout
Didn't realise the 2.2dti is only manual? Why?
Don't really want anything older than I've got tbh, rules out a merc on cost, and really don't like BMW... That and ze german stuff is a bit expensive on bits

Nice to see someone likes the V70 tho, any complaints?

was talking about 523/528 not e39 ::)

Do you need the space for passengers? Or luggage?
LPG the mig + a roof box or trailer would be my choice
or a LPG Lexus, and f*** the boot space ;)

Both, it serves as a van and crew-carrier, roofboxes & trailers are useless & nickable.....looked long into the LPG option (custom spare wheel tank), just not an option

Would you get a good one though for the OPs budget seen as BMWs especially diesels and big petrol versions go for big money even with starship miles :-\
-
Diesel Mig Estate then
or buy a transit with a 2nd row of seats in the back for work, and keep the mig.
That's what I did - worked out cheaper to run two vehicles than buy something which tried to do everything
-
All interesting suggestions but most have ignored his budget ::)

Have seen many 2001 models go for 1500 with around 120k miles. Ebay and autotrader is full of them.

a 13 year old car will be a bag of problems no matter what the brand is.. you will need at least this much extra to use this car safely.. only a set of new tyres at 17 size will cost 1/3 of this price approx
-
The same could be said about omegas. For £1500 any large bmw, volvo merc, Audi will be around a 2001 or 2002 year and yes I agree could carry expensive servicing bills or tyres ect. Only newer larger alternatives I can think of is rover 75/mg ZT or maybe a jaguar s or x type although I personally wouldn't recommend it.
If 1500 is the budget it's going to come with a few drawbacks as with any budget purchase.

A rover???
I may be 41 but i am still alive!!
Not on your life.

Agree mate. Wasn't recommending it personally but could have been an option.

There's a 827 coupe round here that looks like new. Always liked them. Shame my mg ZT was such a let down.

Rover 827 or vitesse is a very able car,I had three of them and would have another if I found a good one, that Honda v6 is a jewel of an engine if looked after :y

Fair enough
How do you get on with the Signum?

Quite like it,plenty of go and good on juice :y

Is it as vectra-ish as people seem to think?
Shame you're so far away, I'd like to see one in the flesh

Then go to your local second-hand dealer. They're not that rare.
-
I've only ever seen 2 on the road, and not one on autotrader or ebay within 100 miles
We have a road of about 30 dealers, not a signum in sight

Obviously dash etc is Vectra albeit in Elite trim so bits of veneer and plenty of leather, rides lower than stock Vectra but still quite good ride and handling seems fine to me but I aint Stirling moss ::),go wise very good, certainly way more guts than my old Omega Estate and low thirties mpg around the sticks down here and forty on a run :y

I am surprised. Maybe that's a good sign. ;)

Just had a look on the trader. There are 31 nationally (auto, diesel), ranging from £1700 to £5000.

Rare compared to a lot of other things, think there's more migs than that!

Not bad mpg considering age/size/engine, may be worth a look
How does it compare to an Elite F/L for gadgets?
What size was your mig estate? I'm surprised a 3L auto D has much more tbh?

Mine was 2.5 with 3.0 cams fitted,Signum would eat it for go,it's not the bhp but the torque that chucks it up the road with very little throttle applied, hence the good economy I suppose.

Yes, you're right, I was surprised at that because I see quite a few round here.

Oh, so you have them all.....in "England" according to your postside!
Care to narrow it down?
