Her indoors turned the lights on the other night and got a pop followed by smoke from the headlight switch so she turned them straight off and drove home. When she got home I tried the lights and everything works except the dash lights. Any ideas?
TIA :y

Fuse maybe?
Possibly, it was too dark to check when she got home but judging by the smell of electrical burning in the car when I got in,I think it might be more than that :'(

Rheostat in switch controls all the back lighting, so that would be my guess :-\

I've put a second hand switch in and there's no difference, i've checked all the fuses and they are ok and everything but the dash illumination is working. Any ideas?

A second hand light switch, Pete? I think Andy is nearer the mark with the dash dimmer switch.

Dash illumination is controlled by a relay type device, with the headlight switch simply providing a signal from the variable resistor (no lamp current passes through the variable res.....whcih is a good job if you see how weedy it is).
