Title: Brazing zink
Post by: Tony H on 26 May 2008, 16:48:43
Hi all, can anybody tell me if zinc can be successfully brazed? If just snapped off the sacrificial anode on my outboard motor whilst trying to remove the prop :(

melting point of zinc =approx 400c
melting point of brass= approx900c
the zinc will be lonnnnnng gone before the braze melts

I think it could be soldered, but you would have to use an appropriate technique, eg grind back a 45deg "V" and fill up so as to get good side wall fusion, a bit tricky !.  Watch the temps as Sassanach has pointed out.

This might help [ http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=2604

looking at that website, i think it comes down to what you are going to use as a filler metal.soldering looks more like it here.

Unless you`ve set your heart on Brazing (i.e: You have hard-brass wire to hand) I would recommend you Silver Solder it using an appropriate S.S/Brazing acid flux: an excellent strength joint with good electrical properties will result and with less risk of conjugant melting points being a problem. :y

Thanks Deb I knew you would have an answer :y Brazing as previously pointed out is not an option due to melting points, do you think a reasonable bond can be achieved using lead solder.
STMO I think the item is too porus to achieve a good bond with superglue

bolts work, apparently.  Just need to ensure good electrical contact between the surfaces as well as getting it watertight....
