Title: scratch repair experience
Post by: cem_devecioglu on 30 September 2013, 12:48:08
one of my friends gave me his omega to sell when he went for America (for 3 years) working in imf..

anyway car was badly painted before stone chips as large as my finger tips :o  (primary coat not sanded properly as you can guess) and some scratches here and there.. and a dead battery..

last week changed the battery.. saturday covered the hood front with some black plastic film.. and later nearly spent an hour for the shop to prepare some paint code 20H..  and they corrected the mixture color tone several times :-\

saturday started sanding + polishing the car.. finished the hood and left front wing..

sunday masked the car .. and also masked around the scratch area mm by mms exactly the scratch shape..

first I sprayed 3 layers of color coat(wrong!) .. later I sprayed 2 thick layers of scratch resistent laquer (wrong!)

later I used hair dryer to quickly finish the job.. after I sanded+polished 2 doors (other side) and later clear all masks..

this morning I sanded the laquer as much as possible but this damn laquer is so resistent if I insisted more I could remove the original laquer completely :(  and the color tone is definitely bad match >:( >:(

my wife commented : failure! ;D

honestly not that bad :D   but next time I will spray standard laquer alone without paint..  pictures will follow tonight

If it's easier you could simply repaint the rest of the car ::)

I come to a conclusion that Cem likes to sand  ;D Sanding is very tiring on the hands even with a machine  :(

;D ;D if you consider the color trials and cars I painted, sanded+polished in the last weeks, its nearly a daily habit ;D

and unfortunately sanding machines make me tired more than doing by hand... and they do not work on sharp corners, curved irregular faces :(

Nice job there Cem, only problem (1st 2 Pics) is you have filled in and painted over the driver Key Lock below the Handle.  :o

sorry Zirk , pictures may have misleaded you..  :-\

unmasked painting area was no more thicker than 1 mm (vertical)  .. so no problem there ..

however, after the application I developed my theory a bit further..   may be its best to use several color coats without laquer (if colors matched)
than sand until reaching original surface leaving paint only inside.. when the surface is nearly level using normal laquer only 2 tiny coats thick.. than sanding and polishing again..

or in case color is very hard to match using laquer only.. and several layers to fill but 2-3 applications and sanding after every application..
so excess laquer layer  always removed easily.. :y

ps: however, depending on the shape and size , such as stone chip application may change a bit..

must note also , after the application most hard part was removing excess laquer thickness and it was scratch resistent..

also surface tension increases the thickness of laquer between masking bands.. so later I will try a few milimeters wider painting with several applications.. and sanding in between..  but of course masking everytime and waiting dry up is tedious..

however, here an original unpainted car is very precious so painting only scratch area is preferred method for most car owners.. even if they pay more..
