Title: Oh FFS and buggerit
Post by: MaxV6 on 08 October 2013, 01:31:56
It seems , from the small cloud of escaping steam, and the minor drip, that the Mv6 has a bloody coolant leak.....  no advisory on it from MOT this morning....

anyone local available to give me a hand finding it and fixing it in the next day or so ?

it appears to be on the driver side,  at the back of the engine bay somewhere.....    so any pointers would be appreciated.

An MOT won't pick up coolant leaks ....... why would it?  ???

Driver's side, back of the block? ............ HBV almost every time  :y :y :y Bite the bullet & buy from Vauxhall ~ £35 + a box of Elastoplast - not difficult, just a all ache to fit.  ;) ;)

............ or the curly pipe at the back  ;)

Either way, pull the wipers and scuttle off ( you can see more and use less plasters  ;D)  and have a look  :y

will do,    I changed the HBV a week or two ago.....  it's done about 100 miles since....

Could be the pipe, easy to damage the pipe when replacing the HBV especially if you have ever had an oil cooler failure.

probably not knowing my luck....

i would deeply appreciate a look from someone who has more of a clue ,     feeling around the HBV seems dry,    but i may be missing it....   i've had the wipers and scuttle off,  and tried to get a look in with an admittedly rubbish torch....  and a bit of a feel about....

i can see slight coolant pooling on the seam ridge below the heater connection pipes....   am i right in thinking the lower of these is the "curly" pipe referred to above ??

again,  the joint feels dry i think....  but my hands and specifically fingers are rather calloused and thanks to the nerve pressure in my neck,   it's difficult to feel anything with any certainty....

there seems to be a bit of broken green plastic clip on the top pipe to/from the heater,  but no real evidence of leakage from there...

They can do that but can't fail it for a coolant leak

Are you in a rush Max? Happy to take a look,  next time we're up Brackley way. But that's not likely for at least a fortnight.

Green clip is usually loose, that's normal.

but thanks for the offer.....  I found a leak this afternoon,    A leak, don't know if it's THE leak.

it turns out that the leak is only obviously visible once the cars been up to temperature and thermostat is fully open and so on....

top connector to heater matrix , there's a broken bit of plastic on the joint with the metal pipe...  i spotted this earlier, but couldn't detect a leak,   but when it's fully up to temperature and it's had about a 6-7 mile run,  and it's DAYLIGHT  it's dead obvious....

It can be replaced, if I understand your post correctly. I think Lazytinker replaces those on his lpg conversions to hbv..?

If it's the hose I'm thinking of it was only about £15 from Vaux

it runs from the top heater matrix connection pipe at the bulkhead,  along the side of the head and then round into a pump looking kind of thing mounted under the edge of the expansion tank.... ish....

and it's a single run, no tee piece.

can anyone educate me on how the plastic clip bits where the hose joins the pipe function....  how they're removed intact and how they're put back on tightly ??

Iirc, the plastic clip has a sleeve which when squeezed slides back a little then you can in theory pull the pipe of the matrix  :)

Some find it easy, some like me get close to torching the car before the piggin thing comes apart  ;)

Have fun  :-X :D

Often very stiff and need a fair bit off wiggling/ twisting, while being careful not to break anything.Once you have the old one off I would do a couple of practice runs - on and off - before fitting the new one.Ime,they are the type of thing that might be a bit of a pig,or might just go straight on without a problem.Unpredictable as with most things on an Omega.

A spray of wd40 or similar around the end of the pipe where the sliding ring is helps it to go back and forth as needed ime Max.
That just sounds wrong for some reason. ;D

And is as the WD40 is not great for rubber seals.  :y

A wipe of antifreeze would work equaly as well
