Title: Help!?
Post by: MaxV6 on 12 October 2013, 14:59:14
After 4 hours of my best if feeble efforts I've got the bulkhead end of the pipe on , but damned if I can get the spring clip to go on the hose joint with the pump under the expansion tank , is anyone with the right skill or tool able to prevent me taking a sledgehammer to the frickin thing ???

Jaime it's the top hose from the heater matrix , runs to a pump type thing under the rhs of the expansion tank , matrix connector was a git to do , thought the pump end would be easy .....
The 27mm spring circlip that secures the pump end would not go over the ridge in the hose at the end of the union to the pump , I tried everything I could , pliers , mole grips , washing up liquid , swearing , even bent a set of long heavy pin nose to try and make them grip the spring ends reliably . Nothing worked , one jubilee clip later, hose on ......  I've run it up to temperature with and without the heater on , let the cooling fans come on a few times , no cloud of steam , no obvious drips from heater matrix feeds , hope to hell that's sorted it , got a spare HBV now , as I got one just in case I'd cocked up the replacement a couple of weeks ago

Before I bought one of these I used to curse the spring hose clips but now I prefer them.

The spring clip applies a constant pressure, you can't overtighten it or forget to tighten it (I've done that enough times ::)) and it doesn't have a screw thread to go rusty & seize.

On larger clips like this if you set grips to open wide enough to get both end tags , they wontclose far enough to open clip all the way , unless you adjust them under tension , which is non trivial. But can be done with another set of pliers . My troube was I couldn't get clip open all the way at the same time as trying to force it over the pipe ridge , whole getting it to stay in the grips , and hold the pump still to provide some back pressure on joint

I 'got by' with a pair of mole grips for many years but as MaxV6 points out there are occasions when the range of the grips isn't sufficient to fully release the clip :(

The other significant problem is finding enough space to get the grips in to release an awkwardly placed clip.

I don't use cheap and nasty zinc coated steel clips  ::) always use the proper stainless ones and take care not to over tighten them.  :y :y ;)

Mole grips are fine where the pipe and clip has plenty of space around it, but most of them on a V6 Omega are awkward to get at....  :(  ::)

Agreed, but the operative word is "small" ;)
