Post by: Nickbat on 28 May 2008, 00:05:45
Quite a lot of activity heading towards the south coast. Specifically, there's this report:

++++++

Last recorded activity 23:58
Intensity class Severe
Intensity trend Intensifying

Current strikerate 58/minute
Peak strikerate 61/minute

Total recorded strikes 2172
Cloud-Ground strikes 1323 - 60.91%

58 strikes a minute? I'll say that's severe!

May weaken a bit over the channel....or may not.

Check out the detector here:

I dont mind em.

Years ago though I laid on my bed and watched a lightning storm build up and the thunder rolled several times over, it was awsome, but the best thing about it was there was no rain coming down.  Would have been arround 1983/4 about 11pm.

It was brill. glad I was in the house though with my girlfriend to protect me.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

A neighbour of mine once experienced ball-lightening while camping in Wales many years ago. He said these electrically-charged balls rained down and exploded in the earth around their tents. Terrifying.  :o :o

A couple of years after the experience above I was driving down a country road when a lightning bolt hit the filed next to the road.

Drove down it about a week later and realised it had frazzled a tree.

I hadnt hung arround, the second it touched down my car took off trying for the land speed record.

Seems to be weakening from a maximum of 130 strikes per min down to 50-odd. Incredibly, at this moment, there have been 3941 strikes from this particular cell. Now, if that power could be just harnessed...... free leccy for a year or more!  ;) ;D

I love 'em -- used to watch the bolts bounce on the sea when I lived in Sussex !  Mind you --- was a tad worrying when a bolt landed in a courtyard outside the house ----- TV blew up !!!!!!

Kevin,
Well that's her excuse. Do you always make sure that there really is a storm about, or just take her word for it?  ;) ;D ;D ;D

As for northern lights or St elmos fire, that is something i really want to see, but i have been told for that you need to be looking at iceland for the best shows

Whilst in Thailamd recently, seen some amazing electrical storms, after watching for some 2 hours eventually got to the house, pissed it down and thunder cracking in front and all round the house, stereo etc., kept cutting out and came back on, removed all metal condusive objects from body etc., was pretty amazing to watch :y

It were fantastic last night storm hit about 0030hrs lasted till02200 aprox.

Amazing watching the lighting hit the ground and jumping across the clouds.Thunder was the type that rolled on and on rather than just a clap.House felt like it was shaking at times.Love it.

Used to go up to Seaford head and watch storms coming in across the channel.Mother nature at her most fearsome, but really awe inspiring.
