Title: Car transporting suggestions please.
Post by: albitz on 30 October 2013, 19:19:31
May need to get a car from South Croydon back to North Essex. I don't fancy towing it around the M25 with my A frame,as it isn't taxed or MOT,d and theres cameras and plod all over the place on there.
Car weighs around 1200kgs so that on a trailer would, afaik, be well over the weight limit for my Omega to tow ?  Also doubtful whether they would allow me to take it through the Dartford tunnel with the A frame ? So -it looks like a trailer with van or similar is the only option ?
Anyone with a magic wand - thanks in advance. ;D

My understanding of the legal position is that its still a car,and needs to be road legal if the wheels are on the road. :-\

Nope its being towed, its connected to the towing car.
A car has to be legal if its being "driven under its own power"

Thought A Framing was no longer legal for towing 'Off The Road Cars'. breakdown or recovery only now?

Do have a mate with a VW Transporter Albs, but not spoken to him for a year or so, do you want me to ask the question?

We have been here before, with a rope / rigid bar the car must be legal and insured, but I am not sure about a fixed A Frame........... :-\ :-\

I'm with Grif here.

Assuming the car has 4 legal tyres, no sharp edges and is reasonably clean, you wont get a tug.

Provided you have a trailer board, all functioning lights and your Number Plate displayed at the rear, why would anyone question it?

Just stay below 90MPH!  ;D

They won't know either .... been there & done that.

Some places are adamant that it's legal, others are as adamant it's not. On the occasions I've towed a car on an A frame, I've taped over the number plates & added a trailer board to the back of it.

Next question - If I did tow it on the A frame, are they going to let me take it through the Dartford tunnel ?
Might hve to ring and ask them.

If you don't want to try the tunnel then you could go clockwise round the M25 ::)
Alternatively travel on Sunday (to avoid the congestion charge). Go straight up the A23 through Streatham (try not stop....) past Waterloo station, over the Thames, through Camden and then up the A1 until you get to the M25 again.

think the guys name is lee phone number is 07702 468729     or      01621 814315
they charged me £98.  a day with £100. dept  seem to like paypal and cash only problem I had with them was only 250 miles a day included arfter that 9p a mile extra but you should be ok with that if doing Essex to Croydon the van was in good condition and pulled pretty good even when loaded easy to load came with a winch so non starter not a problem starting to sound like there pa lol. think they advertise on the bay but not sure.

Where abouts in North Essex are you?

I hired a trailer from Westbroom Engineering (01206 576 959) just outside Colchester on the West Mersea side.

They wanted £60 for the day, but as I only had it for 4 hours they only charged me £30

I picked it up, stuck my Signum on it and towed it behind my Omega with no problems at all. Think from memory the Signum is 1500kgish

There is another firm just outside Billericay that also hire trailers for the day for £50. Have used them, they are very good also

Both are tilt bed and both came with straps. Only the Barwell one had a winch

To be honest its your best safest bet

and from personal experience (I know you should not do it but there you do), you can take an omega well up to the towing limit = bout 1.7T, probably closer to 2T and it'll tow fine.

Im 10 miles from Colchester so will try the Mersea option I think. :y
I have towed an Omega with my Omega (lots of them actually) on my A frame and they are capable of doing it,although I they get a bit of an uncontrollable wander if when you get to around 60mph (an elite with s/l may be better in that respect I suppose).
Im not worried about the towing .Its the combination of the car not being taxed/ Mot,d and having to drag it half way round the M25 or through central London that's the worry.
The car weighs no more than 1200 kgs so I think I will probably hire a trailer and tow it that way.
Thanks for all the replies. Excellent help from OOF,as usual. :y

Yep, Place local to me does trailers for £30 a day. Get a reasonably light one and you'll be well inside the towing limits and 100% legal.

Tow it on an A frame and you are not legal from whatever aspect it's viewed.

Well, mission accomplished. Hired a trailer hich weighed under 500kgs and went down o roydon today and collected the car.
The 2.5 engine does tend to struggle when its pulling almost twice the usual weight, but its all done and dusted now.

I came back through the Dartford tunnel and was surprised they charged me just £2 - the price for one car. I was expecting to ay more. :y
A horrible journey though.Over two hours of 50 mph on the left hand lane with the trucks, and having to concentrate very hard as emergency braking or manouvering doesn't bear thinking about with that lot hitched on the back.
