Title: Auto stalling
Post by: pscocoa on 09 November 2013, 20:34:24
I have never had an automatic stall on me.

My son's Merc C280 Sport did so twice in reverse from cold this morning. He insists handbrake was off.

Thinking torque converter, ATF level etc I did a bit of googling and the issue seems reasonably common on Mercs sometimes with no apparent explanation or frequency of occurrence.

Car has been to Chepstow and back today without issue and drives and idles normally.

Any thoughts. I have suggested he get codes looked at.

Test drove a 2.8 carb Granada that stalled every time you pulled up at a junction ::) suffice to say I didn't buy it ;D

Codes? Crank/cam sensor?

Any throttle valves need cleaning? Dbw I presume?

Handbrake on shouldn't make any odds. Not to stalling anyway.

Presumably today was the first properly cold start :-\

Two thoughts are either a low temp vacuum issue leading to odd inlet manifold pressure or air intake sensor throwing a wobbly and not enriching the mixture to compensate for the low air temp :-\

I had all the fluids and filters done in the Jeep with is a Mercedes Auto box and Engine, thinking this was why gearbox was playing up and putting eml light on, in 2 years of ownership it has only played up on very cold mornings....... ::) ::)

Merc auto boxes are troublesome.

Having said that, the engine should be adapting to load changes better so I would also be checking throttle body

Thanks for all the input - it is behaving itself currently but throttle body and fuel filters are favourites  I suppose.

It is in for service in Feb so if no further hiccups will leave until then  - cold weather may of course cause this to be brought forward
