Title: Winter car care
Post by: Webby the Bear on 12 November 2013, 11:52:51
Hey guys,

Really want to do what i can to look after the car this winter cos if all goes to plan will be getting rust sorted and possibly a respray next year.

Sadly our garage won't accept the omega due to its' length. and width  ::) are car covers any good? if so what sort are good? :)

I wouldn't bother with a car cover. They are more likely to hold moisture under them rather than allow the car to breathe and keep dry naturally in the air. They can also chafe against the paintwork in high winds.

Thats a really good point. Is there anything i can do to look after it though?  :-\

Do that and keep driving it. Just leaving it standing will make it worse very quickly.

What we need is to find a large workshop that we could hire out for a day/weekend.

Everyone chips in and we work together fixing sorting etc and everyone can learn a new trick or two  :y

yep.. but better than days of constant rain :-\ and you will need to take the cover and dry from time to time..  also they need to be tied up to wheels on all corners for strong winds..  and no moisture can be as harmful as bird poo..

my solution is to wax it completely then cover when unusued and check for mosture from time to time.. some models have ventilation..

I use 2 types one  cloth type, another nylon ..in summer I use cloth..  and for rainy days I use nylon.. but be careful if snow melts and freezes on cloth you are in trouble..

You're not wrong.. managed to turn half my (block paved) driveway black when I did the Dax chassis  :-[ :-[ The thought of spraying Waxoyl above my head on a ramp fills me with dread..

Reckon you'd end up looking a lot like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZ_Mtl1q69M

Angle grinder . Just what i did today . Then curerust , wait to dry a few days then red oxide ..finish it off it the spring  :)

You need something on the red oxide as its slightly porous and will absorb the moisture if not sealed  :y

Ah didn't know that , i will find some top coat  ;)

Its true of pretty much all primers and undercoats.

I use red oxide quite a bit on my scrap metal hobby and if I leave it for a few weeks in a place where it can get wet it starts to lift

I have noticed bits coming through if left on previous cars , now i know why now . Any top coat will do for now just to protect it , then it can be prepped again in the spring  :y

Yep, any decent top coat will seal it, even Hammerite (although its not as good as it used to be sadly)
