Title: changing thermostat; cannot get out transfer pipe
Post by: terry paget on 13 November 2013, 16:01:29
OE03EWW 2003 3.2 petrol manual saloon
I am changing the thermostat. I have removed plenum, inlet manifold and black spacer piece. I have remove the power steering reservoir, moved pipes out of the way, and removed the B-bolt. I have dropped the bracket that holds the dip stick (bother), and removed the lifting bracket from behind transfer pipe flange. I cannot move transfer pipe, and am obstructed by dip stick tube. I have not yet removed the two bolts holding down the thermostat. I am stuck.

Should I remove thermostat bolts?
Should I struggle to remove dip stick?
Should I apply more force to transfer pipe flange?

Please advise.

The big problem I had when I did mine was that the stat and transfer pipe couldn't be separated - without destroying the pipe. The pipe is a casting and can be damaged quite easily. I dont recall any issues in removing things once they were separated .... I had a new stat and pipe ready to go ....... Good luck

My approach is to wiggle the stat housing (having removed the bolts) before removing the b-bolt.

The transfer pipe is relatively cheap and you get the 2 orings that you will need anyway. get hold of it with mole grips and wiggle it about.

I wiggled the thermostat as per guide and sheared the bracket that the B' bolt goes through.  ::) I then had nothing to twist against so I feel your pain.  ;D I bolted the stat back down and butchered the transfer pipe to get it separated. A new transfer pipe is about £12 so not a big loss if you bugger it up.  :y
Get angry with it, it's got to come off one way or another.  :y

Good luck.  :y

Thanks chaps. I tried hammering at the joint, putting pack the B-bolt, unbolting the stat and heaving that about; I put back the stat bolts, removed the B-bolt again, and tried hammering down on the bracket, then with a stilson heaving it back up again. Became resigned to destroying it, and wondered how to go about it. Then wriggled it again and it moved some more, then it came free, and now it's out. Phew!

Thanks again for all the good advice.
