nope.. not all ice surfaces are smooth as ice rink.. and even unstudded winter tyres can hold that surface to an extent..

Well... as it was down to -3° last night, here goes...

Runway Performance 926 245/40/18 XLs behaved impeccably, even on untreated back roads. Bring on the snow :y

Sc3 all good and well behaved in -2 temps this morning. Usual grip levels on motorway slip roads.

Driving normally, no loss of grip at all in fact. Funny that. ;)

Maybe there's an ice test somewhere on the internet?

See which country has the most grippy ice. If that particular country gets any/much ice at all that is. ::)

Obviously not an Ice Road Truckers fan... Anywhere north of the artic circle :y below a certain temperature, everything freezes to the road surface so apparently pretty easy to drive on as long as you don't do anything suddenly...

Ignoring all the overhyped blocks on the telly, the autobiographies of Hugh Rowland and Alex Deborgorski are actually very interesting reading :y

have you ever tried ice skating.. I did.. the surface is never smooth unless corrected by machines..  same is true for road surfaces..

car/truck tyres are not ice correcting machines.. surface will be rough in most places..

In about 1983/4 I got studded tyres fitted to the front of my Company Mk3 1.6 Ford Escort Estate, they hardly saw ice let alone snow, but they could make sparks on a nice dry concrete surface; boot down front wheel drive in the dark...... :y :y Apparently they may have been illegal....... ::) :-[ :-X ;) ;)

How can a pneumatic tyre rotating at ???? rpm have an air feed to push the studs out?
