Title: Computer help needed.
Post by: Jusme on 16 November 2013, 15:56:41
Started pc today and it booted straight into safe mode. Have switched off and restarted a number of times but goes directly into safe mode. Searched around on the internet, checked my boot.ini. but it is unchecked. Went into BIOS setup from startup but haven't a clue what to do in there? Not that any of it was easy for me to understand..  :-\ Any help greatly appreciated.  :y

Have you changed or installed any hardware or devices recently, or software?

Try rolling restore back to a time it was working.

Have you tried a different, or no keyboard and seen if that makes a difference?

Are there any cd's or USB sticks in?

What OS is it on, and when did it last boot ok?

Did it install any windows updates (if a windows machine) prior to the last shut down?

Win XP. SP3. Tried system restore. Get a window come up say. 'System Restore has been turned off. Do you want to turn system restore on now. Click on YES. Window opens with a tick on turn system restore off. Uncheck it, BUT. Cannot save settings because it is in safe mode and the bottom of the window is out of sight?? Nothing added to pc at all... Used last night and was perfectly normal.  :-\

Does it actually say "Safe Mode" in each corner of the screen when you are on the desktop?

What happens if you press F8 at startup and select last known good configuration?

As soon as I start up it says, 'starting in safe mode'. From there on in the graphics are enormous and every page is just a mass of dots. I spent absolutely hours last night on the net trying all the various 'fixes' listed on different sites. NOTHING WORKED. In the end the pc was more exhausted than me, and on another restart after going into BIOS settings and selecting fail-safe defaults, it 'refused' and would not start up again? Switched off and decided a trip to town is in order for today. Just one more try this morning. The bl**dy thing started, but still in safe mode??  :o I've had enough.... :-\

Googling suggests that your computer may have been infected with something, and this link: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/ is suggested from http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/windows-xp-sp3-only-boots-in-safe-mode.192884/

I would suggest saving anything you want to keep and wipe and reinstall

Very difficult with XP SP3, as it will say something like" The software you are installing is older than that on your system" because the OE disc will not have SP3 on it. SP3 came as a software update. :y

Didn't get a XP disc from the shop where pc was made so... :'(  Damn thing is driving me up the wall.. >:( Don't know if it has any bearing but, son tried to download latest Nvidia driver the other day, apparently for some reason it was not succesful? But I have opened everything in turn in control panel except for, Nvidia control panel & Nvidia Nview Desktop Manager, they will not open. Thing is I cannot find them in my programs or in add/delete. Guessing I need to download something to activate them? Thank you Shackeng for the link, I did find that last night but decided against going further as it is just another fix program. However, after you posted today I gave it a try, well, almost. It is just downloading Sparktrust PC Cleaner. Another one of those programs that finds zillions of problems on your machine, in my case 2,108. I decided against registering, and then... each time you hit close another page of theirs comes up, hit close and back to the other, and back and forth 'hey ho'! When I finally got them closed up pops another, just to make sure 'I am sure'.... :-\ Hate being in this bungalow, the sound of a computer hitting the path from an upstairs window is oh so much more satisfying...  ;)

If its wiped and a new install that won't happen, just allow windows to update with the new install, but it sounds like it is a possible driver issue

The Packard bell question was because there was a whole load of Packard bells that came with system restore disabled as they had a recovery partition built in. If this was the case you could restore the PC to factory default by running this from safe mode.

A lot of pcs have this other than Packard bell though, so if you go in to my computer how many hard drives do you see? Is one quite small (in GB)?

The keyboard question was because if there is a stuck, or damaged key on the keyboard, that could be causing the boot in to safe mode, trying a different, or no keyboard would rule that out.

If this doesn't solve the problem then the other things to try are clicking start, run, and then typing sfc /scannow then after that runs through seeing if that's solved it.

If not, click start, run and then type msconfig, go to the boot.ini tab and unstick the /safe boot box if it is ticked, then restart and see if that's solved it.

I have seen this before with Nvuidea driver installs.

Uninstalling all the extra Nvidea guff and then rolling back to the original graphics driver normaly sorts it.

+1 for the above, it certainly sounds like the video drivers weren't uninstalled correctly before the new drivers were applied (or the wrong driver pack was downloaded).

'Spot on' fellas...  :y Took pc to local chap today, apparently, in my very basic terms. My video cards are no longer supported by nVidia so the driver information that came down corrupted something or other  :-\ causing the video card to resort to its lowest setting, which in turn screwed the graphics, so I am informed, the pc was not actually in safe mode at all... Funny that many times on restarting it said, starting in safe mode. Ah well! Alls well that ends well. My thanks to all who tried to help..  :y

I was a bit confuddled by this, but glad you're sorted now. :y :y :y
