As per title really, & as featured at the end of many recent F1 wins .....
I wouldn't know where to start ...........
I'm guessing that you need a certain amount of power and the ability to turn off TC/ESP. Can it be done in an auto or FWD car?

You need to break traction on both rear wheels under acceleration and, at the same time, make a violent enough steering input that the car starts to rotate. Steering input is then adjusted to ideally keep the car rotating around the inside front wheel.
So, you need RWD and traction control off. It's easier with a manual box, LSD and more power-to-weight ratio than a V6 Omega, really, but it depends how much traction you've got.
What happens most commonly with an open diff and a heavy car with road suspension is that the weight transfers to the outside rear wheel, meaning you can't break traction here, and you drive round in a wide circle with the inside rear wheel spinning. Nothing like as impressive. ;)
Probably best not to practice in Tesco's car park.

I've seen one of the top gear lot, may have been the stig, do donuts in a FWD. Which i imagine is harder to do... :-\

How do you do a donut?
RWD, no TC, and plenty of right foot.
Quite easily achievable in something as mundane as a 318 iS, but much easier to achieve on a motorcycle ;)

i've often wondered this. i dont know but if i was to ever attempt it in my auto mig (which i won't) i'd stick it on full lock with TC off and just floor it..... no? :-\

Putting the gearbox in '1' might work, no chance in 'D'. But then you've got torque converter slip.....depends if you have enough power....try it in a straight line.....can you get the wheels to spin in '1' when you floor it.......me thinks the omega is too heavy.....even with a 3.2.....with bald tyres it might do it ::) :-\
Of course you could always cheat and attempt it on wet grass.....even a desmond might manage that ;D ;D
Just dont try it at your local park ;D

I definitely recommend old & bald tyres (even an auto can be succesful) .. but not with your daily tyres.. and a wet surface will help ;D

Bouncing off the rev limiter with the steering held on full lock doesn't do the PAS pump any favours, I would imagine.

Don't the guys that like to do this have a separate brake that only works on the front brakes making it easier to do?............ :-\ :-\
Many RWD cars will do this if the surface is slippery enough, something we used to do playing in the snow in our old Cortinas / Escorts etc years ago..... :D :D

You only need a line-lock if you want to do a standing burnout (so, generally, only drag cars) - if you tried to use one for a donut you'd lock both the inside front (largely stationary) and outside front (needs to rotate to scribe a circle) wheels and ... you'd do a burnout instead.
(It's not a separate brake, usually, just a valve in the hydraulic line to the front brakes that means you can 'lock' the pressure in the line and take your foot off the brakes to release the rear brakes completely. Usually you can get away with just feathering the brakes and relying on brake bias to do the same thing.)
