Title: Dog owners
Post by: MR MISTER on 18 November 2013, 20:20:31
Wifey was sitting petting the dog, as you do, and noticed some very small black 'bits' in her coat. She said they'd been there a while. I, of course, gave her the obligatory "yeah, yeah".
Anyway, she googled it and it turns out it's flea poo. To prove it she put some on a paper towel and wet it. It turned red so it was dried blood.
Doggie is not scratching and I can't see any fleas.
Went to asda and got some front line and was telling the girl behind the counter. "Oh yeah" she says, " everyone knows that". Well I bleeding didn't  :-[

I'll bet she's glad she didn't rub the marks off her coat with a damp cloth! :D
Your pooch must be getting too close to Lower Order doggies on the daily walk! ;D

Suspicion has fallen on next doors cat. The cheeky bastid comes in and kicks my big, hard dog out of it's bed and makes itself right at home. If doggie has anything to say about it, just a flash of claws settles matters immediately. ;D

i do not use flea treatments on my lurcher.....was told to give her one garlic capsule each day and that will keep the little beggars away..and after 4 years i can say that it does work as well as cleans her blood cells out.... :y :y

Vet told me cat was giving my collies fleas, tried frontline but found stronghold to be better. Even now the weather is a bit colder if you look on their bellies you can still catch the odd one (horrible blighters)

Certainly works against fleas, but unfortunately not against a whole host of other parasites ... and whilst fleas are "not nice" and cause serious irritation (to owners as well as the animal) , things like ticks and lice can cause far more serious problems.

As a pet owner I am responsible for my pets health and well being, little sod ( :) ) can't do it himself, so despite the cost he gets frontline combo every month.

He is then free to get into any hedgerow/long grass/pond/lake/pile of crap* that takes his fancy with only the need for a bath to worry about

:)  *delete as applicable

Yes, I agree. While we were on holiday last year she got a tic on her neck (and if you think fleas are horrible....). This year I treated her 48 hours before we left and she had no problems.

We use Advocate spot on treatment once a month and no issues at all :y

As said, they protect against pretty much every thing that the dog might be expected to encounter :y

Mollie still ended up with a tick on her in France despite our best efforts of treating her before we went. Think is she must've brought it back with with her to Blighty .... didn't notice it till after we got back!  ???

Horrible little bastards. We got a little plastic crow bar shaped thing from the pet shop and twisted it off.

Don't listen to people who say burn it off or bleach it etc. If you can't manage it, the vet/nurse can do it in a..........tic... :-[

We check her regularly with a flee comb as she is black. No problems .

Little angel she is. :)

But I shall double check with the boss. :y

It's not recommended to physically remove tics as this can lead to their mouth parts being left behind, which can lead to infection.
Your far better off resorting to chemical warfare. Use a cotton bud and dab the little tinker with surgical spirit or similar whisky works as well . My hound Monty picked up a tick a few weeks ago it was as big as a marrow fat pea before I spotted it :o. Seeing that I did not have any surgical spirit to hand and I had polished off all the whisky  I had in stock I  tried meths on it. worked a treat, it let go in a few seconds allowing me to let it meet it's maker by flushing it down the bog :y .

Finding these blighters very hard to shift. I noticed a couple of them running round her belly yesterday morning, so.......battle stations.
Wifey scrubbed her to within an inch of her life yesterday and I re-treated her with front line. After looking on the internet, I went to pets at home and got enough flea spray to do the whole house. It said that after spraying you must not go back into the room for 30 mins, so I did the living room carpet just as we went to bed.
Woke up this morning to find .........loads of dead ladybirds! ;D
Don't know where they'd been hiding but it found them.

Nuvan staykill is what we used years ago when our cat spread his flea infestation indoors. It worked well, but Christ its strong stuff.
You can feel your lungs slowly getting tighter as you spray it, almost to the point hwere you cant breathe.
I wouldn't be surprised if they don't sell such stuff to the public anymore.

You can get prescription only Frontline from the vets....its a lot stronger than 'over the counter' Frontline.
Also you want to spray everything, not just the carpets....sofas/chairs.....and pull the cushions out of them and spray underneath  :y

Advocate here too, seems to work well - you do need to treat the house when you start also or they will keep hatching out of carpets etc

This stuff, Johnsons 4fleas, smells exactly the same as Raid fly spray. That kills just about anything as well. It probably is the same stuff.

Oh and i forgot to mention.....vacuum the carpets first with a upright vacuum if you have one.....not only might you suck a few of the blighters up.....but they get excited about the vibration and come to the surface of the carpet  :y

Anyone used those flea bomb kits for the house ? Are they like a smoke bomb thing  :-\

A few years ago , house got inflicted with cat fleas Council (at the time was free!) were going to take 4 days to come round - got 3 smoke bombs. Lit in house - left for 24 hrs, some still wriggling, then sprayed 2 days later which finished off . problem with smoke bombs - it gets everywhere - so was wash every cup etc. before use. - effective on fleas - probably also on us!

Daewoo's are unlikely to be infested. Most of the dogs and cats in Korea are in the curry. ;D
