Title: Carrying on with the food post I made a short while ago
Post by: Gaffers on 21 November 2013, 15:36:03
Ok the title is a little dramatic and so is the language in the article, I am a little disappointed there seems to be little scientific research in to the claims but if true it would explain a lot of problems people have.

I stopped drinking it a long time ago, switching to full-fat.  I have stopped drinking that too because of the sugar used to make it (except for post outdoor swimming sessions, but that's another thing entirely)

Fortunately I think anything with Aspartame in it tastes vile, so I don't touch it, but it's food for thought. Would be good to get some solid science behind it, though. I guess it exists behind closed doors somewhere. ::)

My brother rightly has been banging on about Aspartame for years.

There are quite a few other things out there which will also be exposed in the fulness of time. Margarines and "spreads" being one.

You can't go far wrong with eating something unprocessed. Slab of meat, vegetables and fruit

I know someone in their fifties who has never eaten veg or fruit just potatoes, meat and fizzy drinks by the gallon(well four litres a day). She is on prescribed two Movicols a day.

When Halls cough sweets made their sugar free products, Aspartame went all over the place due to being a dead fine powder. Trouble with that, was that it went over who ever was anywhere near ie both fitters & operators alike. You breathed it in & could then taste it.

Between this stuff and asbestos I've a good chance of kicking the bucket sooner rather than later due to no fault of my own.  ???

Sounds like scare mongering to me. There is more evidence that red meat eaters have a higher risk of bowel cancer.

As always, moderation is the key. I suppose if you drank 20L of diet coke per day, then you may experience the symptoms in the article.

I take it that the author of the article was American, thus the quantities consumed/encountered are likely to be far higher :-\

A rational question to ask would be whether the recipes of these products are as global as the brands themselves, and if they are consequently chemically identical :-\

Scare mongering or not, what happens in the States invariably follows here...

Unfortunately there is a lot of non science in the article:

"When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning!"

Well there isn't a pill for aspartame poisoning! So that is a fib!

" When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus."

Again, pretty baseless arguments. the quantity of formic acid produced from aspartame lags behind the excretion process, so it is difficult for formic acid to accumulate in the body and cause metabolic acidosis. The quantity of methanol produced is less than that you find in common fruit juices etc. Comparing aspartame effects to Lupus in my eyes means that this women has never seen someone suffer from lupus! Methanol toxicity is very different to the conditions this woman keeps referring to.

And she seems to promote this http://www.usakangenwater.net/ (http://www.usakangenwater.net/) , which looks like a pure marketing gimmick to my eyes!

Draw your own conclusions, but this is the issue with random articles on the internet.

Most of those symptoms can be associated with any unexplained illness.

I know several people who use those sweeteners and diet coke products with no obvious issues.

And as said, I hate them anyway, they taste vile. Full fat coke here. ::)

I don't know about aspartame, but i tried using Splenda as a sugar substitute in my tea and farted like a pixie.

Google "Splenda farting" and you'll see that I was not alone.  ;) ;D :o

The artificial sweetener aspartame has been the subject of several controversies since its initial approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1974. The FDA approval of aspartame was highly contested,[1] with critics alleging that the quality of the initial research supporting its safety was inadequate and flawed and that conflicts of interest marred the 1981 approval of aspartame.[2][3][4] In 1987, the U.S. Government Accountability Office concluded that the food additive approval process had been followed properly for aspartame.[2][5] The irregularities fueled a conspiracy theory, which circulated along with claims, counter to the weight of medical evidence, that numerous health conditions (such as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus, methanol toxicity, blindness, spasms, shooting pains, seizures, headaches, depression, anxiety, memory loss, birth defects and death[6]) are caused by the consumption of aspartame in normal doses in the "Nancy Markle" email hoax.[7][8][9]

Potential health risks have been examined and dismissed by numerous scientific research projects. With the exception of the risk to those with phenylketonuria, aspartame is considered to be a safe food additive by governments, worldwide, and major health and food safety organizations.[2][10][11][12][13] FDA officials describe aspartame as "one of the most thoroughly tested and studied food additives the agency has ever approved" and its safety as "clear cut".[4] The weight of existing scientific evidence indicates that aspartame is safe as a non-nutritive sweetener.[10]

I still stand by my opinions of artificial sweetners and there is plenty of stuff out there about it.  But yes I should have checked snopes first even though it came from a reliable newsfeed of mine  :-[

Nearly bought into a scam that was being advertised on a Christian radio station. The program was Dave Ramsey which deals with financial issues, the scam was a 'free' internet wealth builder system. That is, it was free right upto the point you sign up, after which you paid for everything which seemed to be irrelevant at best and unmentioned at worst.

Easy to be drawn in by such things, but the Americans have a definite knack for them :-\

I think that people have been so brainwashed into believing that sugar is bad for you that they will buy anything that says it is sugar free or artificially sweetened.  :-\

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with sugar.  It's a natural product and provided that people are sensible about their sugar consumption I can't see the problem.  ;)

It's a natural substance that is refined to hell. It bears as much resemblance to the natural product as petrol does to crude.

Fair point!  :y  I'd still rather drink a can of full fat Coke than Diet Coke though!  ;)
