Title: Sump question
Post by: alexw80 on 25 November 2013, 15:37:45
Probably a silly question but thought I'd ask it anyway.

I've done 2 oil changes over the past couple of months, with another 2 planned. I know the sump on the 2.0 takes 4.5ltr and cars above the 2.2 take 5.5ltr (I think I'm right on that). Each time I've changed my oil it's taken more than the required 4.5 to get to the max on the dipstick. Usually around the 5ish ltr mark. I'm curious as to why this is, so my question is this. Can the lower part of the sump be swapped, is it possible that my 2.0 has, say a 3.0 sump, or at least the lower part?

I mention this because every picture I've seen for an oil change on a 2.0 has the sump plug on the side, and the v6 have it underneath. Mine is underneath, on the base of the sump and not on the side like in the pictures.

Like I said, probably a silly question, just wanted to know if that's why it's taking more than it should. Or maybe I'm just really bad at reading the level on the bottle lol

I'm not familiar with 2.0 sump, I've got a 2.2, the sump drain is on the side. It takes just under 5L to fill my 2.2, i end up using a whole 5L bottle.

I usually fill the filter first, let it soak up, before fitting. Once all done, the can is just about empty. 2.2 is basically same as 2.0, just slightly longer stoke, so oil capacity is about the same.

How much are you using to fill it? Suspect as you are changing it more, the quick oil changes have flushed the crap out allowing a little more in.

I would not be too worried, unless you are putting more than 5L in.  :y

Also worth checking plugs for an oil there  :)

Wouldn't have thought a V6 sump would even fit a 4 pot motor

Check what sump you have fitted.

If it is just a tin one, then I do not know, if it has had the later version fitted (for balancer shafts in my memory serves me correct), then it does take 5L. My R-reg is a MFL and it has the larger sump and takes the full 5L.

Works out just under 5ltr, so I guess it's about right then.

I'm assuming there's oil in with the plugs, it's hunting on the revs so am guessing the gasket has gone. Just need to get round to ordering the new gaskets for a clean out of the breathers and IACV, as well as the rocker.

Same engine, but mine's underneath for some reason. Perhaps it's because it's an early version of the model and they changed it later?

I seem to remember a twin sump version floating around. Maybe that accounts for it?
