Title: A new name for a new country
Post by: Sir Tigger KC on 26 November 2013, 22:53:05
So if Scotland becomes independent in 2016, what are the rest of us going to call ourselves?  ???  :-\

The United Kingdom refers to the union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland, so that's out.  ::)  Unless we promote Wales from a Principality to a Kingdom, and then Northern Ireland could become a Principality to give Prince Harry something to do.  :-\

Great Britain is the geographical name for the island of England, Scotland and Wales so that's no good either.  :(

England, Wales and Northern Ireland is a bit of a mouthful really, but how about some anagrams?

Like:- N.I.E.W., W.E.N.I., E.W.N.I. (pronounced uni), N.I.W.E., or E.N.I.W.

I also think Bastardsland has a certain ring to it...  ;D

Any ideas?  ???  and lets not turn this into an independence debate, just a bit of fun!  :)

The Democratic Republic of North West Europe... :'(

Personally I quite like the slightly reduced United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland :y

Can't have United Kingdom as Wales and Northern Ireland arn't Kingdoms as said...  :P

I guess we could have The Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland or KEWNI  ???  :)

or The Kingdom of England, Principality of Wales and Northern Ireland also known as  KOEPOWNI ?  ;D

Incorrect. The full title of the  U.K. is The united kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Presumably the title will change to The united Kingdom of England Wales and Northern Ireland.
Scotland aren't really voting on independence as such. They are voting to leave the U.K. (or not), but the SNP are adamant they will remain in the EU,so they couldn't  really call themselves independent. Seems pointless to me.

Why not reflect reality and call it what it is the English Province of the European Union. 80% of our laws are dictated by the dictatorship in Brussels and the next treaty which ex-maoist Barroso and his Politburo are drafting and will push through by 2015 will finish the job and then you will really find out what they intend.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Alternatively, we tell Brussels to stick all their treaties where the sun don't shine and become a sovereign nation and democracy again as Great Britain and live with much more prosperity and more happily ever after.  :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y

What I don't understand is that a divorce involves two parties, so why isn't the rest of the UK getting a vote to decide whether we want to keep them as part of the UK. I know how I would vote.  ::) ::)
Title: Re: A new name for a new country

Im actually not sure which way I would vote. More than likely to retain the union as Im a Unionist at heart, but I would want the playing field made much more level, after Mc Ruins time in number 11 and then number 10,made the whole thing very unfair.

I find a strange admiration for those countries stubborn enough to want out. The sort of character and strength that we should want to keep. Not keep, that's the wrong word and no mistake ;D but you know what I mean. :)

This has an air of pointlessness about it though, no?

Not really Albs, as the United Kingdom bit refers to the union of the Scottish and English crowns, which then created Great Britain.

If Scotland leaves the union it can't be a United Kingdom as there will only be one kingdom which is England. Wales is a Principality and Northern Ireland is a Province (I'm sure you'll put me right if I'm wrong there), that's why I think we can't call ourselves The United Kingdom of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.  ;)

Union? Surely that's long gone ?
Title: Re: A new name for a new country
Post by: chrisgixer on 27 November 2013, 01:05:33
As an aside, I often wonder if unionists think the union wants unionists? If we could find a word other than British and union to bring the isles together, I'd find that more agreeable as I'm sure they might.

Nobody want to lose their identity under a British flag, or see another identity lost or more distant. ...on average, I hasten to add. :-\

As a Scotsman living in the Republic Of Ireland I think I see daily what will become of Scotland if it votes to leave the Union.
This country achieved what it wanted and has reaped the benefit that it brought , mass emigration of youth since day one of Independence  ,a lower standard of living , poverty and lack of opportunity for decades , dependency on limited national resources , a cold and uncaring Social system run by cold, uncaring greedy and singularly grasping second rate politicians .
Dublin is the ROI  , beyond Dublin in the beautiful countryside life can be hard .
I have often heard it whispered over the last five years ( even on Radio ) that Ireland would have been better off it it had stayed within the UK. There's a reason why 4 million people live in Ireland and 64 million live in the UK.

Think on and be careful what you wish for Scotland , because..................

Yep, me Dads family is from cork, and with one exception, each sibling moved to England as soon as possible, and have been very prosperous since without exception.

Each family member quite certain life would have been much harder at home, much as they love it there. Stories of extreme tax hikes and rising cost of living abound at family occasions.

Ayup, more of the same on the news. Salmond spouting again.

No. New countries if they wish to be in the EU have to adopt(use) the Euro. Cameron hasn't said a seperated Scotland would be able to use the pound. Quite right too.

I am with Rods2 on this. I can't believe that the folk of the rest of the UK aren't getting a vote. There is also the small matter of paying the Scotlessshire back the "Settlement" which with interest is by my rough calculations about £312 billion approx. Where is that traitor Salmond going to get that sort of money?
