If the Eml detects a misfire on one of the cylinders will it shut down that injector to prevent any damage to the cats?

How frequently does it check this?  I've had a missfire due to rainwater in the plugwells, and the missfire would randomly come and go.

As an example:  Heavy throttle = missifre, light throttle = all 6.

Does it open and close the injectors on the fly and if so, how does it know when to open them again?
