Title: Which Compressor ?
Post by: Terbs on 03 December 2013, 22:00:25
Hi all...
Having just learnt that I shall be receiving a large cash Christmas present this year, I am going to get a Compressor. I used to be in the spraying game for 20 years, but that was 20 years ago, so with age, knowledge is diminishing.  ;)
I know you only get what you pay for, and am looking at around £100. Basically, just to run a few air tools, but really to enable me to respray small panels on the Omega if required.
Does anyone have any experience in this area...what size tank do I need, and what pressure.

Could kick myself, as I gave away my other two compressors a while back, one used to supply air for a garage :(

TIA ;)

200 litre ideal .. 100 litre minimum..  dual head if budget permits..  and compressors must be kept in a close area where dust cant enter easily and away from all polishes, pastes and other chemicals..  once they get dirty will ruin all after jobs..

also filters must be periodically cleaned and renewed if necessary

ps: dont look for second hand , they are mostly too dirty for proper paint job

pps: water must be also checked and removed frequently, avoid painting in rainy weather

I've got a small compressor from this range:

http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/range/details/airmaster-tiger-turbo-air-compressors-2/path/airmaster-2 (http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/range/details/airmaster-tiger-turbo-air-compressors-2/path/airmaster-2)

I think mine is the 8/44, which would have come well within your £100 budget when I bought. You still might get something similar in that budget on a VAT free day. I suppose an oil-free one would be best for spraying? Never tried it myself, though

As you can see, you need to spend more to get within Cem's recommended spec. A 25L model will need regular breaks to catch its' breath, and the motors are far from continuously rated but I find mine OK for light use of air tools.

if you use small 0.8 or 0.5 micron spray guns, it will require less air volume per minute..  but still you will have to stop many times when painting a single small panel..

yep.. I have checked UK prices, they are horrendously expensive!  also electric models would be better of course.. but not sure you can find them at high volumes

Prices on that sort of kit have soared in the last couple of years. I suspect the boats from China are in short supply.

I have learned that compressor is  a very very critical item for paint jobs.. in the hardest way ;D

there are also air cleaner/de-humidifiers for paint jobs but the list very quickly goes above budget.

I could stretch to £200. I have £300 total, but I want to put new guts in this computer also.
Once I suss out how much a motherboard, ram and cpu will cost, plus possibly a new card, I'll know how much I can afford, give or take a quid or two :)
