I am putting up some shelves in the kitchen in to a false wall (plasterboard wall protruding in to the kitchen) next 5o my combi boiler which is mounted on the same false wall.
Drilling through the plasterboard I have hit something hard and I want make sure I am not going to damage anything by drilling through it. It seems like it could a fibreglass support mounted behind the plasterboard for the boiler but I am a little concerned about what it is. I do t want to drill a pipe. My stud detector says there isn't any electric wiring there but it cannot detect pipes. The metal detector goes off but then it is within 6 inches of the boiler.
I have drilled exploration holes leading away from the boiler and this thing stops about 11 I ches away from the boiler.
so the question is, what is it and can I drill it?

if its a false wall as you say, you should have at max have the stud work timber depth which with the proper plugs should be enough without hitting anything the other side. also try putting a long screw though the hole and just tap it, you should here it ring if its a pipe. Do not carry on if your not sure though.

A 3/8" hole and torch should allow you to see what it is, or if not, just cut a small square out to investigate, then polyfilla it back in. :y

Just keep drilling and tell Mrs G that's where the ornamental fountain she has always wanted is going. ::) ::) ::) ::) :P ;D ;D ;D ;D
