Title: misfire after stop in deluge - no water in plugholes
Post by: terry paget on 21 December 2013, 10:02:39
X84GNB 2.5 petrol estate manual
2 weeks ago car failed to start. Bought pattern crank sensor, fitted, it ran fine. Friday 13th heavy rain, after 40 miles drive stopped for driver relief, restarted, engine misfiring. Hoped it would dry out and recover, never did. Got it home all right. Concluded it was pattern crank sensor, yesterday bought genuine Vx Siemens sensor, fitted this morning. Still misfiring. Have checked  plug holes 5 and 6, both bone dry.

Any ideas? EML has never come on. I suppose it could be plug leads or coil pack, but it happened after a brief stop in heavy rain.

Water entering thru the wiper holes, then soaking into the foam which then drowns the coil pack/ht leads.

If you change the dispack, get a Bosch one.  They are more expensive (about £90) but I used a cheap pattern one and it lasted about a year and I think it starts and runs better (Especially on LPG) with the Bosch dispack.  ;)  :)

Sealing the scuttle is vital!!  ;)

Thanks for the advice chaps. I have removed the plugs, and plugs 3 and 6 are fouled (grubby insulator) while the others are clean. Looking at Rob G's picture in earlier thread, I see they share the same coil. Now I suspect the dispack. Your comments please. I have pics if they would help.

I have checked codes. They are 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 2 1 3 1 3 1 3 1 2 1 2 11 2 1 2 1 2 . As said before, plugs 3 and 6 have grubby brown  insulators, the rest are clean white. As 3 and 6 share he same coil I conclude dispack is fried.  If it were leads I presume only one plug would be fouled.

If it could be anything else, please advise.
