Just been out in the mig and noticed the car wasn't changing gears as smooth and frequent as before.
As I was driving along it seemed to change into second no problem but then rev'd very high before banging / jumping into 3rd and with that the car with spanner light came on? :'(
The car continued to drive but it seemed like it was then in limp mode and sluggish? I've just got the car home and restarted the engine and the light has gone off. Took it round the block and the same happened again. ???
Any idea what's happened to the gearbox?
Thanks in advance for any help :y

Check the guides for how to check the level and top up the gearbox oil. If that doesn't solve it then it could be gb filter or thrust washer related.
-
Cheers Guffer,
It's been fine all day and then just now it started to play up........ Felt at times like the car was just revving and couldn't or was struggling to find / change gear...... When it did finally change it banged/clunked into gear :'(
-
Start with checking the level which is easier if you can get access to a ramp. I have a garden sprayer converted to fill the boxes if you are passing nearby and need to borrow :y
-
Oh dear!
Best case is low fluid
Worst case will be a poorly auto box!
-
James when you coming over? ;)

The 2.2 I have just bought mate seemed like it was slipping then went back in to gear with a jerk although no warning lights. I bought a litre of ATF today and it's took all of it and it's now 95 percent better. :)
Try that first mate for the sake of a fiver.

Cheers Dan,
Text or Pm me the link or details to what I need please ;)

Re the car with spanner light, is that coming on because of a gearbox / sensor fault being picked up?
I will get the ATF level checked ASAP, hope it's nothing to serious ???
-
IIRC there have been issues with the 2/3rd shift solenoid on some boxes?

The usual fault code is for something like "incorrect speed detected" or "incorrect ratio".
The gearbox ECU has sent out the signals telling the box which solenoids to open and close to select the desired gear. After a suitable delay it has looked at the engine RPM and the speed signal from the gearbox output shaft and seen that it hasn't worked as expected. :(
As said above it can be caused by low fluid level so check that first.
If that doesn't work then it might be a faulty solenoid or a blocked sump strainer or a broken thrust washer. Changing the first two involves taking the sumps off. Changing the thrust washer is a gearbox out job. Either way you end up with a new fragrance by ATF ;D..

Seems to change 1st to 2nd normal and then as I'm driving it's as if it loses gear completely and then car will rev high and then jump into 3rd and with that the orange car / spanner light will come on. >:(
At this point I'm guessing the car is now in limp mode and it doesn't change gear anymore, revs are high and drives very heavy and sluggish?? :-\
Until I manage to get the codes read and ATF level checked then It's guess work on my part. :'(
-
Until we check the condition of the fluid and level it's a tricky one. If it was slipping and level related I didn't think it would throw the warning light on.

Suspect it`ll be P1700

Do you need a tech2 rob or will a standard code reader show autobox codes?

Not necessarily a TechII but you`d need a very good "standard" reader. As said, check ATF first

I've just spoke to the chap I bought the car from 6 weeks ago.
He stated the car has had an ATF change as part of its 120K service / mot in August. So I'm guessing then if he's telling the truth then the box doesn't need a service and the level should be fine ?

Don`t believe everything you`re told Paul. Get it checked to eliminate the "low fluid" possibility. If ATF level and consistency is fine, then get the TCM codes read.

Cheers Rob,
If I have an auto box fault as such, should I get a fault message come up on the display ?
The only light I've seen is the car / spanner light come on when it's gone into limp mode etc

The Sport button's cog should light in the event of a gearbox fault .............. I think ???

Automatic Gearbox is displayed on the MID iirc.

You're right .... just found it ...... page 138 http://images.omegaowners.com/documents/UserGuides/OmegaOct2002.pdf ;)
-
Ive got no auto box fault displayed just the car with spanner light when it's gone into limp mode
The more I think about the problem it's as if it's losing gears and then jumping back in but happens from 2nd to 3rd +
-
These are classic actuator symptoms caused by low atf, blocked strainer or faulty actuator. If atf has been changed I bet it was done by idiots who dont know how to get the level correct. Start with checking the level first and go from there.
-
Hopefully a fellow oofer is going to give me a hand in checking the ATF level in the week :y
Just thinking out loud but it there be a gearbox software issue or update need doing via Tech2 ?
Noticed today the car is in limp mode all the time with the car / spanner light staying on constant now. :'(
-
Just a small update -
Thanks to Blackviper ( Dave ) for popping over today to read codes on my autobox problem.
We started off on a drive round the block after the car got warm and within seconds it was apparent again the car is struggling to get into 3rd gear +. The car will just rev and try and then jump in and out of gear until going into limp mode.
The code that came up so far was p0730 - ( incorrect gear ratio ). Next step is to get the ATF level checked, unfortunately we couldn't do it today due to the poor weather.
If the level appears correct and Ok, then could I be looking at 2/3rd solenoid or thrust washer failure ?
May just get a used working box swopped to save all the if's, but's and maybe's ? :-\
Will update once ATF has been checked.
Paul ;)
-
Sounds like your in the right track. Fingers crossed. :)
-
Cheers Chris, let's hope it's just low ATF but I'm not so sure :-\
Update when it's been checked ;)
-
This problem keeps coming up on here a lot more lately,And seems to always point to the 2-3 solenoid in the AR25 box..

Update,
Thanks to James for coming today. James will post findings later but its probably best to get a replacement gearbox :'(
ATF level was fine and nice and red, it seems a faulty solenoid or worn / shattered thrust washer is the culprit :(
-
Level was fine and ATF was lovely and red. Looked brand new. Selector switch operating as it should.
Sadly this is not the 2-3 solenoid as on a road test the gearbox was also losing drive when changing from 1-2 and just randomly jumping out of any gear. It would also on occasion lose drive in "snow mode" while it's not doing any sort of gear changing.
Removal of the front sump did not reveal a thrust washer however the ATF in the bowl contained loads of black bits (not metallic) that looked just like chewed up thrust washer to me.
My theory is that the thrust washer failed for the previous owner, hence why he removed the sumps and changed the ATF. This is supported by the fact recent work has been done, you can see that the underside of the gearbox sump (main one) has been totally cleaned, and that the gasket on the front sump which I removed was almost certainly brand new (it was a composite type gasket, not the original factory rubber one). The securing clip which is held on by one of the front sump bolts and holds one of the gearbox oil cooler pipes was also not present, again indicating someone has been messing about with it.
I'd be prepared to bet the majority of the thrust washer was removed by the previous owner and we found the remains of the rest within the ATF today
It may well be possible to repair the box, but when Robsey can supply a good AR25 which is proven working for £70, then three hours or so of work to fit this will guarantee a fix, as opposed to messing around with the broken one for goodness knows how long
My advice to paul is therefore to just put a known good box in there.
I may also need a new gearbox on my Elite (subject to doing checks on my existing one) and therefore logistics permitting, we're planning on having a bit of a gearbox party on a dry day and just do them both :y :y
-
AR35 now purchased and ready to fit. ;)
I'm waiting on confirmation from DLK re fitting but if for some reason he can't do it, are there any other mechanics who would like to come to me and fit please?
PM me to discuss further, ;)
Paul :y
-
is the car still running? or its in bits?
-
Car is still running with it's poorly AR25 but it's losing gears all the time hence I can't drive it very far. :'(
Got an AR35 in the boot ;) but need it fitting
-
Would anybody like to come to mine and fit my AR35 please ?
Car has been off the road 4 weeks and is sorely missed :'(
Paul ;)
