Well just had me right big toe nail removed after 9 years of suffering, anybody else had this done as i'm waiting for the anthestic to wear off before the pain sets in, any suggestions for pain except the obvious - getting blind drunk, which may be an option? :'(

Dont go dancing tonight... :o ;D :D

:o Yikes!....that must be agony! :o
I had a horrible accident some years back and managed to sever (and subsequently have surgically re-attached) my right 'pinky' finger in some farm equipment; at the time the medics recommended keeping the sore-bit higher than the level of the heart to reduce throbbing and pain (it really helped too!): advice, which in your case would mean laying down with your foot up on a pair of pillows or somesuch.
You have my sympathy and `hope the analgesia is effective in controlling the pain until your foot heals. ;)

I have had both my big toes done twice. The NHS seemed to cock it up a couple of times and was painfull for a good week after.
Had the last one done private and was walking around the next day with little pain ;)

ow!! take co-codamol and ibuprofen (600, not 400) and try elevate. ice if you have local swelling too.
Good luck!! O..... and somebody to wait in you hand and erm.... foot lol ;)

A bloke at work managed something similar recently with a lathe. Lost 1 & half fingers, fore finger & half his middle, unfortunately his wouldn't re-attach.

and don't wait for the pain to kick in before downing the pills -- take them regularly ( per the instructions on the box) BEFORE the pain starts.

Four operations to save it and a week in hospital with a subsequent infection: I still have the finger but it`s stiff and so I often catch/bang it when working; at such times and in cold weather, the 'pinky' becomes incredibly-painful and often turns blue. :'(
For me the worse part was trying to recover the finger from the bale-grab mechanism and then drive myself the 46 miles to the nearest hospital....having waited (fruitlessly and alone) over 60 minutes for a 'lost' ambulance......`sometimes rural-life sucks!

debs thats must have been dreadfully painfull, hope my toe wont hurt like that :question

Are things likely to improve?

Yuk!
What were doing putting your finger in the bailing machine anyway? :-? As you obviously know, farming gear very rarely takes any prisioners. I bet you were just ....... ::)

Debs .. good skills ... must have lost a decent amount of blood before that drive ...
A tad lucky they could re-attach after that time ..

Sadly not; the accident happened a few years ago now and there`s been no change in the pain/mobility since the healing/physio. phase after the surgeries.
It wasn`t a baling machine, it was a 'bale-grab':a hydraulic scissor action forklift type attachment for squeezing/lifting plastic-wrapped silage bales....it was off the tractor and lying on the ground, I tried to reposition it slightly to align with the tractor`s front loading arm holes: the scissor grab toppled over and the scissor action lived upto it`s name and the moving arm passed over the metal bracket where my hand was....and severed the finger and part of the side of my palm and back of hand.
A rather Pythonesque spurting of arterial blood and then the pain hit like the hammers! :o
I remember that I ran about the farmyard for several minutes.....before the legs went to jelly. :(
-
My worst was losing the tip of my finger and nail on one of those giant rotary sanders in school woodwork.
Splattered some blood at high velocity all around the room, and managed to get one girl to faint ;D
-
ouch Debs! losing any part of my anatomy is a major fear of mine! can't believe you drove yourself to hospital!
As for ingrowing toe nails my dad removed his own with a pair of pliers!!!
he also does his own dental repairs with araldite!!!!

Oh well time for some big toe advice.
It is possible to recover a knackered nail. You need the following tools.
Scapel (No11 is excellent) antisceptic, possible ibuprofen.
The ingrowing is caused by over trimmed nails, and the corners dig in.
you find that the edge of the nail is pointed and is carving up your toe.
This point MUST go.
Take painkillers, disinfect the blade (use a new one - not one after making 10 model aircraft), and disinfect your toe.
Wipe away any pus, possibly even use a salty water.
Now go for it, poke down the front for the pointy bit, use sharp edge up not down, and when you locate the point carve it off.
Apply more antisceptic.
Squeeze out rest of pus and rest.
Keep toe clean and disinfected and wait for nail to grow, if it starts to stick in, check for points, any there - carve off.
Takes about two weeks to do, but now my big toe nails are fine - but eat socks, I file them now, no risk from sissors or knives and cutting to close - generating a new pointy bit to rot my toe.
BUt my files are blunt from too much normal use so wet & dry will do ;D
As to missing digits - I had a thumb removed at 9 months old, the other half is missing a tendon and looks horrible, right thumb is fine
