Title: Brake pipe flaring tool
Post by: Olympia5776 on 29 December 2013, 12:50:44
Went to flare up the ends of new brake pipes on the rebuild of my BMW 635 to find that my trusty old flaring tool only does SAE type of flares whereas the BMW pipe flares are DIN ( sometimes known as "bubble " flare ).
As I will only have to make up 14 flares to re pipe the car I don't want to spend the £100 plus that some kits are being sold at .
I see this one and wondered if anyone has used it ?

There ok if your new material for brake pipe is the soft copper type.

the one in your post takes some practice to use. £ 20 laser one (available for a £10 in other names) is quicker to use, just don't be to heavy handed with it or the tube support breaks.

These type of hand flaring tools are great on the later copper soft piping......they do work on the harder steel type piping but be carefull not to go at it too hard as the nipple on the boss is easily broken....would be a great idea to buy a op 1 boss as a spare before you begin just in case.....the spares should be cheap....just make sure the supplier keeps spares before you order it... :y :y

Working on the basis that I have, on the whole, behaved myself this year and I might get some sheckles from Santa to spend, what is the best brake flaring tool under £50.

Depends on what type of flare you are wishing to make .
There are several types ,

I have this kit that makes the SAE single and double flares that are typically found on Japanese cars and it works very well.

There are cheaper kits on Ebay but mine is manufactured by Laser and has served me well over twenty years .
For the DIN type of flare normally used on European models ,I've ordered this one ,

I was offered the loan of what was thought to be the DIN version of this one today from a friend but when I looked at it it was actually a SAE model. I had the chance to try it out making a SAE flare though and it worked very well and was easy to use .
