I am in the middle of removing the alternator however the two bolts holding it in place do not appear to be coming out but just spinning in their place. Are they really long bolts or could something be broken?
One looks like its a 17mm nut on a bit of stud
Not going well
-
You need to get a wrench on the back as there are nuts. IIRC it's 11mm nut and 17mm at the front :)
-
IIRC, there is a nut on the back of the bolt, so you'd need a spanner on this
//Edit, too slow!
-
Balls! All I have are 10mm and 12 :(
Btw. Can I do this from above? Looks tricky ad I can't see the damn thing

Can be done from above as well.
-
Did tis yesterday SMD,
Done from the top.
The bolt in mine were orientated different directions but as mentioned you need to get a spanner or wrench on either side.
I took the bag-pipes etc out and the airfilter housing for more space (big help).
Aux belt off and then tensioner.
Extracted the alternator mounting bolts and tapped off.
Disconnected the 2 wires then replace...
I used loads of sockets, rings, and trorx. (more than I would have thought necessary... With out a reasonable set of kit you could struggle...
I hope this is some help.

14mm, 10mm, 8mm and an E14 should do it
-
Yeah I was lucky that I managed to find an 11 in an old set bought from Tesco iirc! ::)
I haven't looked at the guide but if I was to ever do it again I would remove bagpipes, remove the aux belt tensioner, cable tray etc etc I had loads of access doing it this way!
I'm thinking that you could sneak around it but my own personal way of doing this would be to remove whatever's in the way.... HOWEVER, I do have a lot of experience in removing everything top end ::) This may not be the easiest way for you though :y

I definately found use for 11 and 15 (i think) as well Rob.
I'm in full agreement Webby, that getting the "stuff" out of the way is the way to go.

Sorry M Kerr... I must type faster ;D
Yeah I was fortunate enough to have airbox and coolant bottle out of the way too.... for the sake of 10 mins removing those things you get so much room!
Only other thing I'd add SMD...... make sure you route the knock sensor wire correctly; you don't want that getting caught up in the aux belt/tensioner assembly. :y

You must have had me on CCTV Webby, while grappling with everything else... I had to go back a couple of steps to reroute the knock sensor wire (duh)...

;D ;D ;D no CCTV.... just did exactly the same thing myself ;D ;D ;D

It didn't work out for me today, I won't be removing anything without the 11mm spanner it seems so its off to Halfords to buy one. I'm quite disappointed with the 150pc set. Almost everytime I set out on a job, I need to go and buy something that isn't in the kit!
Whats the 15mm for M Kerr? Spanner or socket? Whats the E14 for Rob?

Aux belt tensioner, Size of torx head on bolt (13mm will fit)

Hi SMD,
I'm afraid all I know is that I had it out for something... possibly just to remove the aux belt tension to slip the belt off (?) There must be someting in you 150pc set that would do if you need that.
I did have a panic with the 11mm as well but luckily had 1 in the bottom of the tool box.
11mm itn't uncommon in my experience but checking a few tool sets that I've got it does seem that manufacturers often don't seem to bother with them!
I hope it goes better tomorrow.

Went to Halfords and the only spanner they didn't have in stock was the 11mm! :( So went to Poundland desperately hoping they would have something and found the last set of spanners which had the 11mm.
Does the backnut for the top bolt also take a 11mm Mr Kerr? Sorry if its been answered already. According to the How To, the cruise control unit needs to come out for access to the rear bolts :o Did you find this to be the case?
I'm dreading putting it back together because I made no effort to mark or photograph where the vac pipes came out and so I have no idea where they go :-X

Thanks for that link Rob but can't make heads or tails out from that. Text is too small and the copyright is in the way. There are only four vac pipes, two should be easy. If the pipe below is correct, then the other multiram pipe should be simple. Its the two at the bottom of the bagpipes I'm not sure about.

Its the two at the bottom of the bagpipes
One to front multi-ram solenoid and teed to rear multi-ram solenoid, other connects to a "T" piece on the brake servo pipe
-
I think i got it now
So the smaller elbow from the bagpipe connects to the fitting in my pic above and tees off to the rear multiram
Thanks

Make absolutely sure you have the correct alternator, as vx have a habit of dishing out the wrong ones. (...for the 3.0, which are different and the connectors won't fit.)
-
3.2 doesn't have a cruise box. Its drive by wire? No?
-
Hopefully SMD, you'll find that when the bagpipes ater rested in place, just about everything can only fit in 1 place. That sort of technique has worked well for me on the Mig...
Regarding above, I don't have cruise control so can't answer that 1. sorry... :-X

Guess the guide was written based on a 2.5/3.0 :-\

What's my typing like? Beer certainly doesn't hpel! :y

Ah I see.
Old thread of mine shows the differences in alternators.

Ah, of course. :D I love the superior DBW
I have (or will) buy a 2nd hand replacement for now Chris. With andyc now out of the picture, its stealer prices for me. How much is one on TC?

Not sure. Quite expensive for the part only, but they do an exchange service so you get a refund on return of the old one. Brings it down to...£111 rings a bell, but don't quote me.
That's still not particularly cheap, but first time I went that route on my cdx2.5 I needed the car so refurbing was out, and factors wanted all sorts of info I didn't have access to, like the output, pulley diameter, pulley width and on and on. So dealer exchange it was.
Last time the Alt went on my current 3.2 I went the same way but they couldn't source a 3.2 one, 3.0 ones kept turning up due to a labelling mix up at gm. Eventually had to go the refurb route borrowed from a member here iirc.
-
I believe RobG has a good one for sale. ;)
VX prices - XA 120A - £141 + VAT. XJ 140A - £284 +VAT- retail. TC prices - £109 / £219.
-
Ok, I have taken both bolts out but the alt is still not budging. It feels like its being held by something else. Does it slide out forward or to the left and then forward?
Any input appreciated.
-
Move it to the left (o/side) and jiggle it out, not much play in the two electrical connectors though
-
Tried that but didn't work. I then gave it a gentle whack with a hammer which freed it. Replaced the alt and now putting the bagpipes back. Bagpipes are in position but looks a little high. Can someone confirm its supposed to be level with the plenum
Thanks
-
Should sit a smidgen below iirc :-\
Are both the mounting pegs seated fully? One next to air filter box and one on the subframe :y
-
Should sit a smidgen below iirc :-\
Mounting pegs were in place but it was the plastic plug at the bottom of the bagpipes that pushes through a grommet which was not aligned.
But success, its done and working sweet. Thanks to RobG for supplying the part
