5-6 days is normal. Got to be physically posted and checked by your bank before they release the funds. Hence the smartphone idea that's being mooted.

That is the bit that takes a ridiculous amount of time. Sadly it is in the banks interests to be errr slow. Just one example of where Britain hasn't moved with the times. Maybe they would say cheques are outdated and they would have a point. Why didn't you just do an online bank transfer?

Most banks take 3 "working" days to clear a kite, so next Monday would be about right considering the festive holidays.

Once had an argument in my bank about the "working day"bit as they said that Saturday didn't count,so I asked if it wasn't a working day why were they open and what were they doing there? They had no answer to that but it didn't get the cheque cleared any quicker either!

I bank with Barclays. They started doing the 'faster payments' stuff about two years ago. If I transferred some cash to my savings account at Santander, it was there, instantly. Same the other way.
Now it's gone back to the following day again. I always thought it was a fraudsters dream come true.
