Title: How to get the smell of urine out of clothes
Post by: SMD on 31 December 2013, 14:03:16

I washed my down jacket at home following the instructions on the label but this still left it very wet. After 12 hours, water was still dripping off it. So I took it to the laundrette to use the tumble dryer and now it smells like a tramp had done wee wee on it.  :(

Another 12 hours later, the smell is still there! I'd rather not wash it again because it still hasn't fully dried from the first wash and the down is still clumped together in places. This is also not something I can still in a 90 degree wash otherwise I would have done  ???

Will need washing again :'(

When drying, pop a tennis ball in with it, that will break the clumps up a treat :y

Perhaps air dry it next time, then a ten minute spin in the washer, (should simply spin without adding water), with said tennis ball :-\

I don't have a tumble tryer and I will not be taking it back to the laundrette. The first time I washed it, I used a slow spin which is why it was so wet. A faster spin might damage the baffles.

A tennis ball is a good idea, read this before but don't think it would have the same effect in the washer

It would help on the fast spin only setting, as said shouldn't be any water in it, but might help to wring it out :y

I'd wash it again, and hang it either in the airing cupboard or above a radiator......or if a dry day even outside  :y

Amy tells me that what you want to do is wash it again with Borax, or bicarb if you can't find that..

Just keep it as your " going down the post office" outfit.

I will wash it again with my normal detergent, once I bought some tennis balls. If the smell doesn't go away then will try some Borax. Is it suitable for delicates? Seems like a heavy duty product. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intralabs-Borax-Powder-Decahydrate-1Kg/dp/B003DU5NTW

Drying it in an airing cupboard is a good idea but still leaves the down in lumps

I believe her exact words were "Yes of course you can!", then she googled to be sure and confirmed it ;)

I did ask how much to use and her answer was "I'd just eyeball it" .. So that probably doesn't help much!

Down is a sod too wash without ruining it.

The smell will be a result of the chemicals use to sterilise the down at point of manufacture-it will lessen with time.

Washing normally will damage the down and stop it lofting correctly. Detergents and fabric soft enters will cling to the down and feather and stop lofting, meaning insulation. Clumping will do the same.

Wash again, use detergent but no fabric softener. Put through on a few extra rinse cycles.

Then tumble dry with several tennis balls till fully dry and the coat puffs up fully. A moderate heat for longer time is better than high heat for short time. Don't air or line dry. Radiators will also be of no use if you want to maintain the coat.

A pure soap detergent is best, but as unlikely to be had, normal with extra rinses is the next best thing.

The quicker it drys the less it's likely to smell, but once dry air for a few days and it will go. Don't be tempted to use chemicals to mask the smell it likely damage the down and ruin the coat

Good advice there.

I have a delicate detergent for wool which I will use and did previously read about putting it through another wash without detergent to fully rid of any soap residue. I will buy three tennis balls tomorrow and take it down the laundrette again for drying. It was recommended to put down jackets through short cycles of low heat as it cools even further towards the end of each cycle. Hopefully it won't stink this time

Well 5 hours drying time and £15.50 later my coat is back and in better shape than ever. Doesn't smell like a tramp has been living in it either

Good stuff.

Unless it's waterproof (unlikely) I'd now spend £5 odd and get a DWR spray to apply to it.

Won't waterproof the coat, but will cause light showers and snow to bead up and run off the surface.

Sprays on, and means being caught in rain won't result in a similar situation as this one at the start.

Down is probably the best pound for pound insulator-but only when dry. Advantage of synthetics is they still insulate while wet.

Something like this

http://www.nikwax.co.uk/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=16

Would do the job.

You can also get ones you add to the coat before tumble drying that are slightly more effective.

Hi jimbob

Yes it is waterproof. You're right about down, its a great insulator and super comfy.

Do these waterproofing products leave a glossy coating or a noticeable film?
