Title: Running rough.
Post by: footloose on 07 January 2014, 11:49:09
Hello, After all this rain I took the car out and after about a mile it started to run really rough. I have had a look and there seems to be a bit of water around the plug wells. I wouldn't have thought that a little water would have this effect. There may be water around the diss pack though I have just replaced that. Could a new one be effected that badly in just a short time.
I have probably stuffed the cats as I had to drive it for a few miles. I am hoping that the hot engine may dry the engine a bit. All caused by a badly fitting scuttle I suspect.
Any views on this would be appreciated.

Seal the scuttle up above the dis packs and make sure your scuttle drains are clear too!!

Yes the scuttle does leak on some cars. Also check the windscreen seal is secure to the bottom of the screen.

An inspection with the bonnet up and a hose on the windscreen will reveal all.

Cats will be fine, as the ecu shuts the relevant cylinder down once a missfire is detected. This is reset once the engine is re started, and the process will start all over again if the fault is still live, or it will run fine if the miss fire has gone.

Thanks. I will have to go out and see what I can do with the scuttle while the weather is dry. Its probably my fault  may not have put it back properly after I changed the diss pack.

Could be, but once disturbed they never sit right again for some reason. I find a bead of sealant around the metal lip of the scuttle drain, where that daft piece of draft excluder sits, seals it over 246. And sealing up the hole around the passenger wiper spindle stops the drip over 135.
Bathroom sealant, gutter seal, or old cam cover sealant in my case. ;)

Hello me again. Just been out and sealed every where I can see. I can't see all of the diss pack but what I can see seems dry. I have checked the plug wells and they seem dry enough. The engine seems to have a regular miss can't really tell which cylinder is at fault. the cam belt is ok, that was changed about 3K ago. All the vacuum pipes and breathers seem ok.
Do you suppose that the diss pack may have developed a fault. Or maybe a plug. It seems strange that this happened all of a sudden after the heavy rain. In my experience generally
If something happens over a period of time its worn out and if it happens suddenly, its broke. I'm not much of a car mechanic. but I generally muddle by. any ideas anyone.

When my Coil pack went it was in the middle of a downpour, massive misfire, recovery truck home ... next day it started fine with no misfire at all !!! On examination of the coil pack the cracks were obvious as well as some corrosion.  My thoughts are that the cracks allow moisture in when its persisting down, which may then dry up but the corrosion continues, and the "short" is worst whilst its wet....

I changed the diss pack in October last year. I suppose I could have a duff one. And as far as the scuttle is concerned its a bit ineffective. I have put a bit of stiffish plastic under the scuttle and over the plug area and diss pack to redirect any water that might get through tonight as we are expecting heavy rain again tonight..
