Title: For geeks only
Post by: Nickbat on 03 June 2008, 22:38:07
I found this very useful utility called filemon.exe.

It shows every process request that your programs are making. I just found out that my something in my PC is making a request to open and close my Quickcam every two seconds ad infinitum. No wonder things were getting a bit slow round here! An excellent tool either for diagnostics, or just curiosity. Actually, I expect all the geeks here already know about it...  ;)

You can download the utility here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896642.aspx

Cheers

Nick

This software is very revealing. I just closed my Logitech webcam, but COCIManager.exe, which is a Logitech process, is opening and closing endlessly. Found a post in a forum on the internet in which someone else had a thrashing hard drive caused by this file. I do need and use the webcam with Skype, so I don't know whether I ought to disable it or not.  :-/

Filemon and Regmon both very useful, were part of Winternals toolkit, but now under MS banner since they hired Winternals head honcho.

Filemon.exe is part of a suite of free software written by Mark Russinovich.  Sysinternals Suite can be downloaded from -
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/0e18b180-9b7a-4c49-8120-c47c5a693683.aspx

Check out autoruns - you will be suprised at the amoount of krap that runs on startup slowing your pc!!!

Run Process Monitor instead - replaces filemon & regmon and is vista compat!

Usefull set of software that lot ... but some of it is a bit complex if you don't know what you are doing ....

Take care you don't do something you regret !! .. Backups become even more imprtant when you start fiddling with an OS !!

If you get it wrong Windows MAY become unstable/unuseable ....  :(

I haven't fiddled, but I'm nosey and it seems that the biggest draws on my system are:
Webcam
Skype
Spybot (teatimer.exe)

Skype has a reputation of being a bit resource heavy. Hence I use a proper voip system

I believe the new Nvidia 7**i chipsets have covered some of the issues with voip.

I know my motherboard struggles and thats got the 680i chipset in it so I use skype on a seperate laptop to take the strain off the system.
