Just noticed the exact same job i do here, is being advertised as a vacant position at our USA HQ in San Jose!
:-/ :-/
No ties to speak of here, no mortgauge/rent/girlfried....
:-/
-
You only live once, mate :y
-
well i wish i had the oppurtunity to go somewhere, but i have kids here for 3 more yrs, have a good think m8 you dont want to regret it and also not regret it. check out the area and the lifestyle and have a good think, may help you decide :y :y
-
only you can answer that, hell of an opportunity though
-
Could be the chance of a lifetime .. but would have to be considered properly, and not done on a whim ... :y :y :y
-
Go for it tunnie, the yanks really do reward their work force and you wont get screwed to the floor when you try to do anything. If you work hard you get the rewards, over here you get less the more you work.
GO FOR IT :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y :y
-
just checked apartment rental, get some niiiiice places for little money, sallaries look roughly the same too! :o :o
-
Go for it. :y This country's getting ever deeper in the sh1te. :(
The worse they can say is no. :y :y :y
-
.... and the dollar/pound exchange rate is in the UK favour at the moment. If doing sums based on this, remember the bang per buck will improve when the exchange rate improves - or plummet, as the case may be!! :y
-
If t'were me, in your position, I would be out there, faster than a ... er ... fast thing!
Still, needs a bit of thought -- but I would apply while the offer is still there -- you can always back out later ------ give you some thinking time
-
I say go for it mark as you say you have no ties here and it got to be better than the uk to live in :y
-
One thing to bear in mind is no National Health Service, you have to pay private medical insurance. Can be costly.
Only 10 days holiday per year
Plus points are pound against the dollar is very favourable for you at the moment.
Plus point, very reasonable house prices, and you will get far more space and land than you can probably dream of here.
The US has an awful lot going for it, but would I go, no I would not, I now have an American manager and he is the laziest person I have ever worked with.
There are many plus and minus points to the US
Ultimatly only you can decide if it is the right thing to go for.
-
Oh yes the holiday is terrible
How much to ship the car over - or is it hunt for a Catera?
-
For goodness sake go for it.... You have no commitments to tie you down at the moment, do not miss an opportunity like that!
-
If you can get the company to sort the legal stuff (not easy getting work permits within the states) then why not go for it...........
-
Go-Go-Gadget!.....don`t miss such a life-changing opportunity if it is possible Tunnie.....I lived in Northern California for 25 years and would go back tomorrow (tonight actually) if it were possible, I miss the lifestyle, freedom and space....not to mention the 'team-player' positive attitudes of co-workers and the great leisure/work balance that U.S employers offer professionals.
Go for it.....and go with the positive-attitude of making a life there and you`ll live the dream. :y
-
go for it tunnie you will wake up one day and regret it if you dont mate !! :y
-
Go for it... :y :y :y :y
And remember this... Big engined cars are normal and fuel is cheap!! ::) ::) :y :y :y
-

Yeah, well, you'll need a lot more money to live over there! ::)
-
I agree with everyone else mate, go for it, you only live once :y
-
Go for it!! :y
I did it about 4 years ago and stayed out there for a couple of years. Cost of living is lower and better quality of life IMHO.
Great experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat if SWMBO would let me!! :y
-
Go for it Tunnie! You only get one shot at life!
-
As youve no ties....why not!
Will you regret not trying for it?
If you go for it and it doesnt work out, at least you tried :y

WOW, loads of responces people, cheers :y
Humming and arring it on my delayed train back. I shall be focusing in a different area too, been at my current place 12 months, so 12 months on this stuff, and another 12 months on something else would look great on the CV.
Plan to register my interest tommorow morning :y
RE: Medical issue / No NHS, this did cross my mind. However i do have full Bupa cover which my work provide, so i need to find out if this will still be valid.
I belive the company will sort out legal stuff.
Only trouble is there was 3 in the team i work in, now only 2, if i leave, we are stuffed, a replacement for me needs to be found and trained up before i leave, i think!
But i will still register my interest, cause the CEO was keen for people to go over there! :D
-
..... if i leave, we are stuffed, a replacement for me needs to be found and trained up before i leave, i think! .....
.... and that's for some one else to worry about! ;) :y

In your position, I think I'd do it.
I work for a large US company, and they do not treat their staff well at all. Its the only american company I've ever worked for, so don't know if its the norm. I know my collegues in the states get very little holiday vacation.
-
We'll check the meetings/gatherings for one in California shortly then.

I think most US companies are probably similar in the experiences of those who I know who have worked for them. You are a "resource" or an "associate" rather than a human being. Some people don't have a problem with that, some do. Not sure if it's any different in this country to the other side of the pond, except that employment legislation is probably weaker over there from the emloyee's POV.

Sounds great, I was over there a few years ago, and enjoyed it tremendously. However that was a good 15 years ago, and things have changed a lot. You will have to think fast in todays ever changing environment, and deliver lots of products on time and under budget. Also do you want to live there?. The laid back Hollywood image is nice but is probably far from reality. If you are good (which you probably are :y) I would expect a substantial rise in wages for that move. Will they pay to have the Mig transported out there?. :-? Also in London they stab you, over there they shoot you. :'( :'( :'(
Sorry for the slight reality check, but the world is changing fast at present, and trying to guess what's going to happen is difficult. Which would you prefer as president, Tony Blair or George Bush ?.
cheers Ken

Go for it Tunnie, It will be a life experience :y and IMO theres never been a better time to wave bye bye to blighty, bordering on recession, nanny state, immigration, property market, cost of motoring, etc, etc, etc, but remember it's not a one way street so if it does not work out you can always come back. Good luck with whatever decision you make :y
-
if you dont go will you regret it in 10 years time.? ;)
-
cheers all, going to register my interest this morning! :)
See how it goes :D
-
All the bast with it Tunnie, we are all rooting for you.

True, but he's going to the wrong place to escape, if that's the intention. "out of the frying pan, into the fire" comes to mind.

you'll still have access to OOF, and you'll have a 3.0 catera :y

How about a 5.7 Liter V8 ;) with those cheap fuel prices ;)
-
well today, i spoke to my boss.
He said he had no objection to me applying, and it would be a shame to see me go!! (ahhh made me feel all warm and fuzzy)
He forwared me to the HR lady, as he did not know the process for applying for internal positions. Company was only bought 1 month ago.
Spoke with her, she said get your CV updated and a covering letter, and we can apply tommorow! :D :o
Thanks for the link martin, but i won't be shipping my car out there.
A 4 pot 2 tone car in US? with European suspension settings!? no way!
I need someing soft, i have driven many times in the states and seen the appauling roads they have, i would not want to inflict the damage on my 2.2.
Word is there is relocation packages on offer, with legal expenses paid.
Currently re-bashing my CV, not updated it since i joined 11 months ago.

I'm not sure what you mean about the roads over there, it's like driving on the moon around here. Still no point taking a car over. Stuff is way cheaper over there, although a price premium in CA.
Try to get living expenses and UK holiday levels. Don't be shy about asking for full wages plus living expenses. Shockingly expensive over there, and obscene commute times.

If i got my UK package, but in $$ i would be happy!
Found some nice apartments 10 miles from the 'new' office, well in my price range.

Sounds good, and you don't need to worry about savings yet, so go for it!
(You do seem to pick the most expensive place though!)

The plan was NY, but since we have been bought we are concentrating on Europe now, leaving US to our US buyers!
Just found this apartment block:
http://www.move.com/apartments/listing/C473221
It has the same ZIP code as our USA HQ!! I could walk to work! :o :o :D :D

And no council rates. :y
Zip codes do cover a larger area over there though . . .

The only point that I made where moving to the states would be disadvantageous to Tunnie is the recession. On all the other points the states are the better place to be
