Do the likes of Piper cross and/or K&N air filters really make a noticeable difference to performance? The people selling them are always going to tell you they do because they want your money 8)
I would be happy to spend the extra providing I can see an improvement in performance but I've never purchased before &
given the big difference in price - I'm sceptical. Any impartial views please?

I had a performance panel filter. no MAF problems in the 18 months i had it fitted but you wont feel the 1/2 horsepower difference

Real world, no difference, they can even cause issues.
Its the oiled variety that can cause MAF issues but these type also clog up pretty quick to so end up being a restriction unless you clean and re-oil them on a very regular basis.
Years ago in the days of pancake airfilters and the like, the bog standard items could be restrictive and changing them made a difference (I remember a carb engine with a tea strainer fitted for minimum restriction!), these days, the surface area of air filters is huge and the restrictions pretty much nothing so gains are non existant.
What you might get is a bit more induction noise.

Was given a Red K&N one of a breaker a few years back, it hadn't been oiled by the previous owner who was aware of the Maf issues, tries it for a week or two on a MV6, made bugger all difference.

Best thing for the dti is a remap,will improve power delivery,torque and mpg,but get somebody who knows how to do it properly.

I've got a piper cross in my 2.2 petrol at the moment not noticed any diffrence tbh. Even the mpg is the same and not a diffrence in sound either :)
Personal I wouldn't bother forking out the £35ish :y
