Title: Cam belt kit and water pump
Post by: alexw80 on 15 January 2014, 10:30:01
Hi there,  could do with some advice on this if anyone can help.

It's nearly at the 4 year mark now since the last belt kit change so am looking to put an order in with the nearest VX garage that does TC, seeing as the belt kit seems to be cheaper from them than Eurocarparts. My question, should the water pump be genuine as well or doesn't it matter that much?

Also, does anyone have a rough idea of the cost of a genuine rocker cover gasket, just so I know what to expect when I phone them.

If the pump is a GM one and is working well with no noise leaks or excess play it can be left alone

Cam gaskets iirc are £36 a side plus the dreaded vat

Don't forget your o rings and black sealant and breather cleaning

Try buypartsby for the Cambelt kit. Do you have the correct setting kit? :y

Ignore my last. Just seen yours is a 4 pot. You must change the w/pump :y

Being a 4 pot you only need a wedge between the cams, not a full setting kit.

The cam gasket is also a doddle on these, give the throttle body / idle valve a good clean at the same time :y

Yup, as James said water pumps a must on 4 pots even if they look like new  :y

As for genuine, well V6 pumps have seen quality go down. GM's 4 pot ones used to have metal blades, now plastic. My 2.2 is due one soon, so need to price it up. Depends what the difference would be, i previously have been going TC with Vx, but if it's silly money might have to go elsewhere.

Gasket is cheap for 4pot, this must be GM though, not pattern. It's a dead easy job, worth doing breathers too  :y

Think the pump was about £44 +vat on TC website. Carparts4less had one for about £29 ish. So might opt for that one.

Got IACV and Throttle body gaskets on my shopping list along with the sealant (90485251 if I'm not mistaken)

Thought the gaskets would be a bit cheaper than that tbh, £25.80 +vat and then another £7.60 +vat just for the o rings  :o

Also looks like they've stopped the timing belt kit I saw on the TC website. First quoted the price of £50.88 +vat then said it's non servicable and quoted £66+vat for another. Assuming they've changed the kits at some point theb.
