Title: Home Cinema
Post by: Kate on 25 January 2014, 21:29:46
Bought a new home cinema amp and it sounds great.

Been watching wolf of wall street, gravity, captain phillips, lone survivor etc and it sounds great.

Anyone else use home cinema sound systems?

Onkyo - they are the expensive ones aren't they?

Never used a Yamaha before - what are they like?

Excellent ........... They have been around for a while and keep updating. Mine is an AZ2 which I've had for a few years now ....

Expensive is difficult to decide really. It took me almost a year to save for my unit, which for me is expensive. Cost me 300 pounds, but to others is probably loose change.

Saving up for maintenance parts for my car is a mountain and a half for me to climb!!

I have an Arcam AV9 (decoder & processor) and Arcam P7 (amplifier) - they'd have been about £5k each, new.. I definitely didn't buy them new! ;D Along with a big set of Monitor Audio floor standing speakers.

They do sound a lot better than my old Harman Kardon AV amp & Kef speakers when cranked up, but they're less suited to general viewing, I think. The HK & Kefs work at low volume whereas these really need driving hard to get the best out of them. Good job it's a detached house, really!

Gravity? Captain Philips? Ooh you are naughty. ;)

Sony Amp. 5.1 DD surround set up with Eltax speakers and sub. Got to have the surround sound element IMO. Adds a whole new dimension to movies.

4k tv next. So a while yet. ;D

I've got the older version of this:

I did not want the fuss of wires going everywhere, just enough kick to lift computer games and good films.

Looks good. How does it  sound?

I've got lots of meters of speaker cable around the living which cost much more that the amp! ;D

Does anyone use a 7.1 system?

Sounds good enough for me, decent enough for computer games and films.

Not as good as a full surround, but that is a compromise due to the size of the unit and lack of physical speakers behind you.

Had a yamaha unit for years but never actually wired it up for its full potential.

Not sure whether its classed as a 6.1 (4.2.1) or 8.1 (6.2.1) or something else.  :-\

Has 4 main speakers but also provision to set up as Front A + B/Rear Surround + front and rear centres with Sub.

yamaha rx-640rds

Also bought a panasonic bluray 5.1  am rather impressed with that apart from the sub is far too powerfull even on low volume (Could do with its own volume setting)  tried all options with the settings and EQ still sounds good with the sub disconted though ::)

I've got a Sony STR-DB798 AMP with some Wharfedale 9.6's bi-wired into it, just some small speakers for the back although I mostly prefer to listen to it in stereo just with the 9.6's

No need for a Sub with them I've found.

I run everything through a media PC so it's just connected up with an optical cable.

I have a set of KEF's in a 6.1 setup following an exectutive decision to pension my large missions off during a lounge redecoration.

These are connected to a heavily modified Sony amp.

Can fault the speakers though, very pelased with them (but not as good as the big boxes they replaced)

Running a Yamaha 6.1 amp
Various pairs of smallish Mission speakers all round with a baby Eltax sub behind the sofa to fill out the bass.

My daddy Missions (M74's) / Cyrus 2 amp are used just for music  :-*

Does anyone have any favourite movie audio? I always liked the t rex sounds in Jurassic Park.

The THX sound test thingy always sounds good:

Some re-work to the power supply stage (better quality and slightly higher capacity smoothing caps plus some additional lower value casp to improve the HF response, slightly faster rec diodes and associated parralel snubber networks) slight mod to the power stage feedback. All gives a better attack on the Bass and a much cleaner HF

I must admit I'd assumed any mods would be to the power supply - one area that manufacturers frequently cut costs ...........

Apocalypse now
Main soundtrack in Gladiator
Crow
Mamma Mia - The Wedding Scene
Saving private Ryan

Forza Motorsport through the forest at the Nurburgring

No girly titles there though. :-\
