hi, i will relate this to a previous thread about my 2.2 dti vec recently developed poor starting the first start of every day then fine every start that day afterwards, before i change leak off pipes etc i thought i would get the battery checked, it is about 4 years old and a gm one, i bought it from vauxhall for my mk 4 astra at the time, i just asked for the biggest battery that the tray in an astra will take. few months after i got the vectra its original gm battery gave up so i put the one from my astra in. i got a battery test done yday and it come back as good, i told the guy i bought the battery from vx when i had an astra, he checked his system to see what battery it recomemnded, there halfords own one was a 610amp or a higher bosch at 750amp, my gm one just now is 510 amp, could this have something to do with it?? when i first put this battery in it was fine but have i possibly killed it abit and now its starting to show??
cheers

You have stated the cranking power.
What is the capacity?
I'd also follow Kevin Woods guide to check the charging system is working OK.
-
right i dont have a clue about any of this so here is all the info stated on the battery
12 01 212
70 AH
255 CCA DIN
510 CCA EH
cheers

70Ahr, so meaty enough.
As said, follow Kevin Woods guide to check charging... ...esp this time of year, as lights/fans/wipers mean longer trips are needed to put back in what a start takes out.

i see what your saying, first start is allways crap but every start afterwards is good so maybe a fuel related issue after all
-
Or a drain...

well i put a replacement battery in earlier that was removed from my dads vec cdti elite before it went to heaven ( its the same bosch one that halfords recomend for the vx 2.2dti ) i wont know untill i give the car its first start tommorrow but when i started it earlier it seemed to start ALOT quicker. time will tell. if not then theres a diesel specialist guy not far from me who has offered to do a vacum test on the leak of pipes for me.

quick update, got home from work earlier and gave the car its first start of the day, it fired up excellent the second the key was turned!
-
Have you given the old one a good charge, and then tested it again?
-
no i havent mate, although i know that its early days with the new one so i will see how it acts the next few days

Fit a hand priming pump to the fuel feed to the fuel filter.....stops drain back to the tank when its stood which reduces the amount of air getting into the system. This helps protect the pump and electronics and also aids starting when stood (assuming there is a small air leak) and makes bleeding after a filter change much easier.

so far the new battery seems to have cured it, i did however go and see a diesel specialist near me on sat morning after speaking on the phone with him, just to rule out leak offs and inj seals, firsty he pointed out that my leak off pipes arent original gm and have been replaced already, he then connected a "mighty vac" to the leak off pipe that goes into the diesel pump and pulled some diesel through, it held its vacuum fine and as the diesel went up the tube there was no signs of any oil in the diesel, i would have thought you had to wait a certain amount of time to see the end result of a vacuum test but he gave me the thumbs up in about a minute...in regards to the hand priming pump it sounds a very good idea, wish i had thought of that when i first bought the car but im not sure how long i will hold on to her now, although in saying that i might end up getting one anyway, my dad has a one way valve he got from another dti he can fit but ive read that they sometimes cause the fuel pump to work harder? why is it the first start of the day i get a puff of smoke out the back ?
cheers

can you give me a link to one of them?
