Title: Need a shed
Post by: chrisgixer on 03 February 2014, 09:47:36
A bigger shed. Mines wrotten. And too small.

It needs to be 6 to 8 feet wide, and at least 12 feet long. Maybe longer.

I'm thinking order some timber and build my own. :-\

Any thoughts? :)

Oh, and a Pent (is it?) roof. Flat, slops front to back.

The shed I installed is the Yardmaster metal shed.  Fairly easy to build, done in a day.  But I dont know if they do a 12' version or not.  I went for metal for security.

I guess building your own would not be too difficult, just make sure it is square.  A quick search found this, it's in imperial but easy to convert:

I'd build your own if time permits :y

It's easy enough to do, but once you've bought all the timber, felt and adhesives, glass and putty iron ware etc it might be worth buying one from a local supplier :y

Plans are freely available, eg:- http://www.we-r-here.com/cad/tutorials/level_2/links/shed-plans.pdf

A bit of digging and a pallet or four of blocks and some cement...

Bish, bash, bosh :y

Thinking further, are there any rules on attaching a shed to the back of a garage? The garage being attached to the side of the house. Finishing in line with the rear, so the rear of the garage and rear of the house are one straight wall.

My garage rear door opens into the garden, where there's about 5 feet to the shed door. The shed being about 8 feet deep. With plenty of garden behind.

I'm thinking have the rear garage door open directly into the shed. Then another door on the side of shed obviously. Means opening two doors to get into the garage, but it also means I gain 5 feet of space. Although some of that 5ft is access to the garage door. Plus I'd have to move the outside tap.
Also not sure if a pent roof will clear the rear garage door, as pent slops to the rear.

As I understand it, provided there's no sleeping accommodation, and its one story high, it should fine...?

Think 'conservatory' with respect to the rules and regs.

E.g. its a temporary structure which is not designed to be 'lived' in.  :y

So exempt from planning and regs (in general, there are other thinsg to consider)

The current shed is a foot from next doors fence. So I'd have to fit a gutter on the back adjacent edge on the new one I guess. And it could be considered a fir hazard, storing a lawn mower and being wood obviously. :-\

Any further pointers appreciated. :)

Those shed things.. terrible for firs. ;)

I'd not get a metal shed, personally.. I had a 10x12 yardmaster here when I moved in and it would sweat something chronic making everything wet and rotten inside :/

www.gardenbuildingsdirect.co.uk are cheap, but reviews of the BillyOh sheds are not favourable :( There are some folks on eBay offering made to measure sheds at reasonable prices - I've been looking for a 16' x 12' for beside the garage myself..

Been looking for a house with double garage. Preferably "en-suite" from the kitchen.

Shed might be cheaper. With a bit of luck and a following wind.

Current shed won't be a fir hazard, its sodden.

Thanks for that link, hopefully the site will be up again soon.

Maybe they'll do a bulk buy? :-\

Been looking for a house with double garage. Preferably "en-suite" from the kitchen.

That one next door to me is still up for sale .. double garage is two long rather than wide, though, sadly .. and I happen to know they rejected an offer of £315,000 on it so they're a little optimistic on it's value considering it needs the kitchen and bathrooms gutting (unless you like 1980s kitchens and 1970s lilac bath suites!)

Wood though. Too much condensation in metal.

Plus it's the drainage that's my concern, the garden slopes into that corner where the existing shed is. Hence the damp, I suspect.

We inherited it when we moved in, so not sure what's under there currently.

That's partly why we rejected it, tbh. Been through a bathroom and kitchen here. I'm in no rush to go through that again. If they are serious about the sale they need to sort it.

Its over priced at 340k. And it's not a 4 bed as they claim. Plus we'd loose side by side parking for three cars like we just about have here.

But that utility would get knocked into the garage if at all possible. ;)

Aye, they're being greedy - it was originally listed for less I think, with the agents I had out the other day. As he said, they've been there for three billion years so whatever they sell for they've made a tidy profit, and anyone coming in is going to want to gut the place..

A decent solid base for starters  :y Dad got a ready built one 8x6 and they came and put it up on the base he built for it . Nice and strong shed , not that big but enough to put his garden tools in and potter about in with a small work bench . I built my own 4 yrs ago 12x10 , the roof leaks quite bad now  :'(

Lightweight Kingspan SFS or Metzec studs, cement particle board on the out side, insulate depth of studs with Rockwool soft rock, then 9mm ply on inside.

Make the front (or one side) higher than the back (or other side) so its a mono pitch roof, insulate roof with Kingspan K15 on top of CP board and cover in Sarna single ply membrane, creates and insulated inverted roof and clad the CP on the walls with anything you like. Warm, dry and won't rot.

Its how I've (nearly) built a 3m*2.4m 'shed'

Mine also has a Schuco leaf and 1/3rd secure by desgin full glazed door, I covered the concrete base in Liquid Plastic structural waterproofing and in total it hasn't cost me a penny apart from my time.

Guess working on a £14m caldding project where theres a bit of left over helped :-)

I've just got an order (for a friend of a friend) for a timber workshop 20ftx12ft, with a pent roof, to be built out of scaffolding boards.

route a groove down the long edges of each board to be splined with 15mm ply (which I get free, but would cost about £35 a board, ripped to 1in wide - you'd need two full boards.).
9in wide scaffold boards = 70 of them to form 3 walls (set vertically).
Scaffold boards are 13ft long, so cut in half for a 6ft6 wall - 35 at £6.50 each (50p/ft from my local supplier, I'd ask for a bigger discount if I build them regularly)

another 160ft for three horizontal rails to tie the walls together + another 11x13ft for rafters = another 300ft (which could be reduced to 150ft if you ripped all the boards lengthwise.

gives a grand total of £377. + 15% wastage = £450 in timber + base + roof.
That'll give you walls of 1.5in thick timber, which nobody's going to break through anytime soon - no condensation problems, reasonably good insulation, and if you want to hang a shelf, just screw it straight to the wall.

Hmmm. I don't think anything off the shelf will be suitable tbh. I need doors in certain places. Might get away with a modular design with sections that can be arranged as I want them if such a thing exists, but it's looking like a trip to the Timber yard at the very least.

Will need to lay a solid base and sort some drainage to a soak away.

Sounds like you need to make/have made.

I was lucky, I found the ideal shed for my needs, off the shelf. It just so happens that I probably didn't need a shed after all (although those who'd been in my garage would probably disagree ;D)

Asda direct of all places have some well priced large sheds that might suit me, though not Chris by the sound of it.

I was in Costco tonight .. they had this on display:

8' x 10' plastic fantastic, £700odd..

One of these would be quite nice in there:

£359 which, for the quality, seems like a pretty good deal..

Or one of these, although Amy says these would look better as kitchen units:

£335..
