Just wondering if anyone has any experience of these? I mean ones like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIESEL-KEROSENE-SPACE-HEATER-NEW-70000BTU-WITH-THERMOSTAT-/191065353534
I was recently impressed with how quickly one got a three car garage size workshop nice and warm despite having a 7'7" garage door open to the outside world.. not completely sure I have enough space (they say 2.5m from anything flammable) but the ventilation requirements seem small (0.29m2) compared to gas heaters and allegedly produce much less water in the air (which is half the problem I'm trying to combat!).
In a 5.5 x 5.5m garage it's probably overkill, but also quite possibly a lot cheaper than electric? It's that or perhaps I'm better off with some background electric heat (say a 2Kw convection heater)..
Choices choices, but they do get so toasty warm.

Unless they are running perfectly they can stink and make yer eyes water :-X

Well if you will chuck used engine oil in it..... ::) ;D

I will admit I did briefly think about the 20L of used engine oil sitting in the garage.. ;D but then decided that would probably be a swift way to clog the thing up, and diesel is cheap enough given how much they (say) they consume..
Good point about the smell though - mind the one I witnessed smelt like roses (or not at all, really). Having said that I couldn't run it with the door closed without gassing myself, either way.. ;D
-
they're absolutely fab, but possibly overkill for your place.
think Rolls-Royce RB211 and you won't be far wrong
-
Yeah I was slightly shocked at the amount of noise they produce! You're right, probably overkill (although the space is set to expand soon..)..
Boys and their toys, though.. :)
-
these will (legally) run on red diesel ???

Yes they will run on Diesel or Kerosene but may need the fuel pressure adjusting to get a clean burn......... :y :y
-
Its when they start to run out of fuel they get interesting so keep on eye on them.
Waste oil heaters work well though.

Have some fish ready as they do get a tad smoky as they run out of fuel ;D
On the plus side they can heat up a cold and draughty workshop (are they not all) rather sharpish :y :y
Used them several times in the past :y

I'll be interested in this, should Woman and I manage to get ourselves a unit towards the end of the year... bad memories of working in a unit with a gas heater making us all very ill, despite ventilating it properly.
-
Depending on the size of unit these are not really seen as a healthier alternative to gas
What kind of gas heater was it?
In the good old days folk used to use site gas heaters indoors with propane and suffered for it

It's that long ago, I can't remember what type it was. :-\
One thing at a time, we need a unit before we can think of heating, haha...
-
Just remember it is horse and then cart not the other way round which is my speciality ;D ;D

I'm sure I remember Mark saying that you needed an environmental agency license, giant flue etc etc for waste oil heaters..

Booo. Be a great use for waste engine oil, save a trip to the dump!

The garage i go to, has one for their workshop....burning old engine oil...but i dont know if its because its seen better days....it seems to regularly break down (broken at the moment) and catches fire about once a year :-\ But then, in winter, its on full tilt 10 hours a day, 5 1/2 days a week.

So I picked up a cheap(ish) diesel space heater off ebay a couple of weeks ago and at the weekend it made it's way down to me thanks to a friend of mine (and member here, oddly enough) in the back of his DTi. And then to my house on the back seats of his RX8 ;D
By heck it heats the garage up quickly. Sounds like an aircraft is landing in there, but toasty warm.
Naturally since that day it's been sunny and warm almost every day... ;D ;D

Of course..
Just another thing to trip over while you're busily finishing that Cobra in time for the summer. ;)

You mean the chassis that now has a length of kitchen worktop and a sink sitting on top of it?
Oh and another two lengths of worktop laid alongside it..
