Title: Rough 3-4 gear change
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 13 February 2014, 18:29:43
Since tranny change,

Car now goes forward and doesn't lose drive ;D

The changes are all fine, including 3-4 under light driving, however when giving it large say on overtaking, and then backing off, the final 3-4 change is quite jerky

Solenoid? The 1-2 change is perfect tho, and I think this solenoid is shared?

ATF new, sumps clean, thrust washer intact.

Opinions welcome :y

Are you used to the less refined 3.2's TCM, compared to the superior 3.0l setup?

It's a 3.0 car, all factory original, the box was from a '02 3.2 v6

Does that help? :y

I should add, that 129mph change from redline 3rd to 4th is awful if you lift off and reapply power. As is the 85mph 2nd-3rd, just not quite as pronounced

Ah, should be reasonable then. Can still force a (what we call) lag, but not as much as 3.2. If LPG comes in to equation, that makes it worse

No LPG on this one, just petrol

I'm thinking solenoid issue

I noticed from you wanted post. Not convinced currently, as TCM would flag it

I shall double check all codes and data - are you thinking mechanical issue then?

Why does James have so much agro with autos?  :-\

Touch wood, but never seen a fault with an auto beyond thumpy changes cured with a fluid change.

Got live data on the box? Thought 3-4 was replaceable. Tbh.

Redline 3rd to 4th is a shade under 130mph.

Heyford's runway is a long one :)

Good stuff. I've never heard anyone getting their Omega close to top speed (only because I've never asked).

What did it feel like going that fast in it?

1-2 solenoid also controls 3-4/4-3 shift so given you say the 1-2 change is OK it`s doubtful that the solenoid would be at fault ???

I took mine to 135 when based in Germany and I can concur.  Lovely :y

The XF spent a full 20 minutes at 155 and it was so comfy the missus didn't wake up until we reached our destination and she realised we were 1.5 hours early ::)

Yep, the faster you go, the better they get. :y

I was once the first car onto a freshly reopened motorw- er, private road. Mine sat at 130 just as easily as it does 60mph. Omegas are excellent for driving in a manner likely to cause early arrival.

Now absolutely fine, silky smooth

Wondering if perhaps it was just because it had been sat on the shelf for 3 years

Had a v enthusiastic drive to work, couldn't provoke the issue...

You'll probably find that there's some "learning" around the closed-loop control of the fluid pressure which the ECU modulates to control the "hardness" of the shift, so guessing that took a little while to adapt to the new transmission.
