When I start my 2.6 first thing in the morning I get a tapping nocking noise from the engine. Last about 3/5 seconds then goes. Is this normal or is there a problem with the car?
Did an oil change last month but that didn't help it. I used valvoline 10/40 semi from GFS.
Also yesterday after parking it up for 2 days as I work away from home it was hesitant and juddering for fist 2 mins. Tho never done this before and was fine this morning pulling well with all it's power.
Any thoughts ??

Sounds like a sticky 'tappet' The hydraulic lifters stick closed sometimes when they've been left with a cam lobe on them overnight. You've done an oil change, which is a good thing anyway, whether it helped or not. Wynnes do an oil treatment for sticky lifters - never used it myself, but seems to get good reviews. :y

Works wonders :y
The iffy start is probably damp related, and sitting for two days will also allow the oil to drain completely from the heads. If it clears quickly then not a big deal... the lifter treatment will help. If it doesn't clear once the engine is hot then you have a problem :y

Ye the iffy start cleared straight away and has been perfect today. Will give the treatment a go and hopefully will do the trick.
Thanks for the help

My 2.6 has been tapping for a few moments after a cold start for about 18 months.
I fitted new spark plugs a couple of weeks ago and found one loose plug :(
I haven't noticed the noise since...

Plugs had been in forever though iirc :-\ they start to come loose after 30-35k...
Leave them until the 80k interval that VX suggest, and you'll find them barely fingertight :y

They had been in for about 70k. (so pretty much backs up every comment made about the 80k service interval being an overoptimistic sales ploy.....)
I still think the plugs are worth checking, I hadn't considered a loose plug as being the source of the noise as all the experience on here points to lifters or manifold gaskets.

That it stops once the engine has settled immediately after starting does suggest a sticky lifter :y

Wynns can work wonders.
However, before putting it in, I'd change the oil, as it works better if you can leave it in for a few thousand.

Good point, well presented :-[

Had just the same problem. 2 oil flushes in 10K and GM oil and there's no sound at all now. Mind you I routinely throw a flush in at each oil change anyway.
