Hi Guys
My 2.2dti 2001 estate is poorly and will not start................she will turn over and try to fire but wont ;-( ,And after a few moments of trying to fire there is a cloud of white smoke out of the back............
I've had a family mechanic read the codes with his Snap on reader (looked like a tablet in shape for info purposes) and there aren't any codes coming on, but he did say on live data there was no signal from the crank.........
Would this be true? Would there be no signal without giving a code? If its not crank sensor, what else could be wrong...........leak off pipes etc?
Any help would be gratefully received......

Hi Guys
Well, I've taken a chance and fitted a new crank sensor...............and she still wont fire ;-(
Any thoughts on next steps other than doing a basil fawlty and whacking her with a stick........
I'm thinking tomorrow of replacing the leak off pipes and maybe cracking open a fuel line to ensure I'm getting fuel through..
But any help would be great..........

Someone with a lot more knowledge than I,will no doubt be along shortly, but meanwhile I believe that the more common problem on 2.2s is the cam sensor and not the crank sensor.Would this give the same symptoms?

If you have a look back there is a lot of late about DTI's, but yes leak off pipes are the first thing to check as when old let in air and the fuel goes back to the tank. There is no lift pump on them and the engine fuel pump is the only one. You can get a kit from the dealers for the leak off pipes for not a lot of beer tokens.

This is a diesel, not petrol.

Morning all
Well ive replaced the leak off pipes this morning...............still not firing.........
She is so close, I can tell she is trying to........ ;-(
-
Keep trying as you have air in the system, but dont crank for long periods.

Guys
We have a result.................she has fired up :D :D :D :D :D
New leak off pipes.........then cracked open each of the fuel lines whilst the wife turned the key until fuel squirted out, then cracked each one back up......this in turn, then she fired and is all good.
Only issue now is the EML is on and she wont rev above 1200 rpm..........so Im going to put the old crank sensor back on to see if it makes a difference, then if not may try the boost pressure sensor off off my 2.2dti Frontera.........she also seems to have a very small mis fire...
But the main thing is she is working under her own steam.........................
Thanks for the support and advise, really appreciate it.

If rev counter is working its not crankshaft sensor, maybe try an ecu reset 1st,disconnect battery for a few hours and then reconnect .add some millers diesel fuel treatment to the tank, this helps alot as i used it in my zafira dti years ago,and keeps injectors clean .

Did you have a warning light before you changed the leak off pipes? Did you unplug anything to get to the pipes?
I would go back and double check that everything is connected as it should be.

Just my luck...............went out to move the car tonight and she wouldn't start..............just turning over again :-[
Lifted the bonnet and there it was, a broken fuel pipe.................happy days............ive repaired her, but tomorrow morning will have to crack open the fuel lines again to remove the blocked air...............I could really scream at this rate !!!
