I have watched a lot of "flooding and storm damage" type items on UK TV and not once heard anyone say Insurance premiums will have to go up. Car and building and business insurance.
Is it a given or do people get compensated out of a government fund?

You've been watching the wrong programmes then. Both BBC and sky news have had insurance company reps on saying premiums will definitely rise.

Premiums will rise for cars and everything else insurance based,so they don't have a hole in there profits, bet were looking at a 30% increase, then wait till they get some p.r company to announce it all dressed up and shiny,so they don't look the criminals they are.

I'm not sure I agree with you on that, IMHO of course. They are commercial undertakings and if the risk of flooding goes up then so should premiums - much in the same way that car insurance costs more for teenage drivers. I'd agree with you if they increased motor premiums to cover flood damage to property though. I'm sure that insurance for many many households will increase as a result, I'm just happy that I live at the top of a hill - if I flood then most of Notts will be under 90 feet of water :o. I also think that billions has been written of the value of property which was previously highly valued. Who suffers the loss there, the homeowner or possibly even taxpayer?

Remember BigGrif thinks any company out there making money, are criminals or cowboy companies ::)
At the end of the day, insurance companies are out there to make money. They are commercial companies, they are not public services or non profit organisations. If you live in a high risk area, then you are going to need to pay the premium.

If you live near an idylic river, you should have to pay the premiums for the luxury of being able to have a bath in your lounge.
Says the one expecting to get arse-raped over house insurance when things are sorted :'(
