What happens if you don't have a bank account to pay by direct debit, or you are overdrawn and the bank won't pay, or...lots of other little idiosyncrasies that will crop up?

Just read it again....you can still pay at the post office. That's provided you produce your mot certificate (according to that site). MOT certificates are no longer issued though  ;D

Seems a bit unclear about buying a car from a dealer. Do you pay for the car, get the V5C and trot off to the post office, or will you use your tablet/phone to tax it from the showroom, or will they let you use their computer, even though the car will still be in their name?

Sounds like fun. ;D

I guess every car will be sold on the last day of the month, and every car purchased on the first day of the month to avoid the DVLA getting the "extra" money that a mid-month sale would generate .... as the old tax being surrendered can only claim "full months", and the new tax has to operate from the first of the month ... so for one month the car is taxed twice....   :(

As you know, it's already more expensive to tax in two, six month, installments. I wonder how much they will make from people stupid/skint enough to pay monthly?

I think that this is a fantastic change to the system ... let's face it, a tax disc is just clutter restricting vision through the windscreen ( although small they annoy me, especially when cleaning the inside of the screen). Being able to pay monthly I think is great, Don't you just hate the trip to the post office waiting with all the pensioners to get your tax disc? it always takes forever and it's a big lump of cash all at once ... I will be wanting to pay monthly and put it in with my insurance costs  :y
