Title: Gillette razors
Post by: chrisgixer on 26 February 2014, 21:23:11
For those that use them...

Is it me, or are the newer Gillette fusion razors nowhere near as good as the sensor Excell derived Mach3 turbo ones. The three blades seems to give a closer smoother more comfortable shave IMO.

The five blades are harsh, bit more cumbersome, and don't shave as close. :(

I have always used Mach 3 and have never tried the 5 blade ones. Stick with what you know I say :y

The question you want to be asking is how many blades DO you need?

IMHO the answer is one GOOD one.

I gave up on cartridge razors like this a year or two ago and bought a quality double edge razor and blades, along with brush and good shaving soap.  I get a far better shave for a fraction of the price. I won't go back to the mass marketed stuff.

I like the mekur 34c razor
Astra / feather / Gillette 7 o'clock blades
Mitchell's wool fat soap

A cracking combination for me. If you go that route you can buy trial multipacks of blades to find what suits you.

Tried them, or something similar years ago. Ended in a bloody mess. Although back then, most razors did ;D

Disposable single razors where worse. Each to their own I guess.

3blade jobs seemed to give the best results, for me, and I've just stick with them ever since. They are bloody expensive though. No arguments there.

Agree. Disposables are a disaster. I think half the Key is in a good weighted handle that you let glide with its own weight. Wasn't cheap to get started but running costs are minimal.

Also found changing my morning habits helped get a good shave. Such as not shaving the minute I jump out of bed and showering before I shave rather than after. All helps

Precisely MrB. Although fusion knocks a day off that. Gets annoying earlier.

I find the 5 blade razors ride over the shaving foam rather than cutting through it so you get a closer shave with the 3 blades. These days I use either Tesco or Aldi as blades are much cheaper. TBH the Tesco one gives the better shave.

Might be worth checking your local Ikea to see if they sell razors?  :P ;D ;D ;D

Me too, although that's as much to do with my "baby face complexion" as can't be arsed  :) :)

Just switched to Wilkinson sword, with 'gel' thing on it. What a bloody nice shave!

Did have those Gillette battery powered jobbie, supposed to 'stimulate' them to stand up, but this Sword one was just super, super smooth, so nice to shave with.

Got it with a box of about 15 blades from Costco, should last me years  ;D

Dont use poundland razors  :(
Title: Re: Gillette razors
Post by: Bigron on 27 February 2014, 17:52:05
Emd, I was stupid enough to buy those Poundland razors - 3-blade "power" - and they felt like dragging a rusty, used hacksaw blade across my face!I have a Gillette Mach 3 power razor, but the cost of the blades means it sits in the bathroom cabinet most of the time.
I'm currently using Wilkinson's pikey 10-for-a-£1 twin blade disposables!

Ron.

I use Mach3 3 blade cartridges. On the rare occasions I can be arsed, that is. Good enough for me.

Being a bit of a gay boy, I have to use sensitive skin Gillette gel, and shave in a very hot bath, so its like a sauna. Blind, obviously, mirrors are for confirmed ladyboys.

I use Philishave - for the man who really can't be arsed. :y

Was a bout to suggest sitting on you, but thought better of it :P

Take it you lost the car in the Asda car park then ::)

Besides, better people than I invented the combustion engine so that I might drive everywhere... so far be it for me to disrespect their efforts by jogging ;D

What are these "razors" of which you speak?
Title: Re: Gillette razors
Post by: Nick W on 27 February 2014, 21:37:25
I got fed up with paying for Mach3 blades that only last for 3 shaves, and returned to a traditional double edged disposable last year. They also last for 3 shaves, but when you can buy 10 over the counter for £2(and much cheaper on-line if I could be bothered) the saving is worthwhile. Plus, at that price, I'm not tempted to stretch them out for a fourth shave which never ends well. Or cleanly.

I find the disposable ones clog up as the blades are too close together , then throw them away after one shave  :( Fusion dont clog up  :y

Agree. Disposables are a disaster.

Hmmm. Not all disposables are born equal

Blade sharpening is a real industrial skill. A good sharp blade means good shave, crap blade means lots of blood !

Look at the small print on the pack. Made in USA will probably be very good, made in India will not. Sometime it just says packaged in Czeck Republic but not where made.

So . .
Tesco own brand Made in USA  :y about £1 per 10
Tesco Value - made in India  >:(  stupidly cheap
Morrison own brand Made in USA  :y
Sainsburys own brand Made in ????   >:(

Sometimes even big name disposables can be crap

I refuse to pay silly money for fancy Mach IX Turbo Extreme wotsits.

I used to use the Mach3 blades - never did think they were that great and clog between every stroke (fnarr), so I gave up and just started using the same clippers I do my head with all over.. uniform stubble everywhere ;D

Recently decided to try the beardy thing, just use the clippers with a guard to keep it all a uniform(ish) length. Actually so far seems more gonadache than uniform stubble was as the guard tends to lay the hairs down so the clippers miss them.

Such trials we men have.. ;D

Ooops got that wrong!  :(  I use Lidl's G-Bellini Shark 5 blade shaving system! It's still cheap and good though!!  ;D  :y

Branded razors like Wilkingson Sword and Gillette are silly money to be honest.  ::)
