Title: How to remove the heads......
Post by: minifreek on 28 February 2014, 18:49:58
How do the heads come away from the block....?

Iv released everything i.e. head bolts, cams removed etc...

What Im having a problem with is the heads are loose but they just won't lift enough for them to be removed...

How do you get to the coilpack...? thats stopping the right hand bank from being removed...

How do you get to the big water pipe that runs to the back of the engine block...

Iv released the exhaust from the downpipes on both sides, do I also need to remove the manifolds too....?

If you do, how do you get to all the bolts to remove them... does the engine need to be dropped to gain access from underneath...?

Getting a bit miffed with this motor, been without it since last week when the cambelt slipped and trashed at least 8 valves on both banks... hence the need to remove the heads..

Im going down to Shropshire with a mate of mine to collect a pair of heads off a good engine tomorrow to fit to mine.....

Unbolt the coilpack from its bracket, that's a small torx bolt in each corner. That should give you enough room to wrestle the head out, although another pair of hands helps.
The waterpipe is two bolts, one of which needs the oilcooler pipe moved slightly, loosening but not removing the banjo bolt worked for  me. Then you wriggle it past the exhaust manifold.
These are both done from the top, remove the scuttle if you haven't already.

Remove and refit the heads with the exhaust manifolds attached; they're a sod to do any other way.

You do NOT need to move the engine.

Well on the 1-3-5 bank you need to remove the water pipe that attaches to the rear of the engine and obstructs the head being removed (I use an 8mm 1/4 socket on a short extension to remove the two bolts)

I leave the dis pack and bracket attached to the rear of the 2-4-6 head, but on the 2.5/3.0's be aware that there are three grounding wires attacehd to th DIS pack bracket which need to be removed.

Thankyou, I found that if I removed the heatshields from both heads, then the EGR pipes...?? the silver pipes that attach to the manifolds, the heads would then be persuaded to be removed.. The left or 1 3 5 bank..? came away easily, also once the exhaust down pipes had been completely removed from the underside of the car via the 13mm bolts.... the 2 4 6 not so easily, because of the coilpack/dispack and the 3 earths...

All done now anyway, and removing the scuttle did make life a little easier too, does help if you have small hands instead of the large snow shovel type that I have....  ;D
