Title: Thermostat
Post by: BazaJT on 07 March 2014, 19:45:52
Apologies if this has been discussed before[it more than likely has but I'm not clever enough to find it]today I enquired about the cost of a new thermostat only to be told that my car was built at a point where a change was made between just a 'stat  and a 'stat that's integral with the housing. Is this likely to be correct or am I being mis-informed as to there being two types?Car is a 3.0L V6 Elite registered on a W in 2000 and is a F/L model.

I would go with the integral one :-\

At least that way you're not stuck if the housing cracks or gets damaged in the course of removing the transfer pipe or thermostat core :y

Ah,so if I buy integral type but my car has the other type then they're interchangeable, yes?

I know that most Omega thermostats are Integral type (even the Omega A) ... also it will have more ensured operation .. but the important thing is to buy new original GM part with suitable operating temperature.

the thermostat pushes into the thermostat housing so is integral to the housing but you can remove it from the housing

Given the risk of cracking the housing on removal, you would be daft to by the thermostat core on its own :-\

definitely I agree but there are some people who would go for the cheapest option

crack a few of them in my time and the long pipe coming off it. if you can buy the complete housing

One of theses... about £36 delivered :y

Rest of it from VX, total is about £50-55 in bits...  Genuine stats retail for around £78 here :-\ but transfer pipe and O rings are cheap enough, £14 iirc :y

Been quoted £24 inc.vat for integral type.So if I get that then I'm also wise to buy a thermostat pipe and if not included some "o"rings,is that right?Just want to be sure I have everything necessary to hand before I go in to the job.

Be aware that some of the thermostat housings are "thinner" than others, and if you use the original bolts on a "thin" one it will "bottom out" and two things could happen ... the head could split if you overtighten, or the thermostat will simply leak as it doesn't seal properly... you need a couple of slightly shorter bolts then it all works correctly as you can torque it down properly.

Mine was £17 delivered. Wahler part; obviously the original supplier, as someone had made a very half-hearted effort to grind the letters GM off it. Other than that it was identical to the one I removed, right down to casting flash in the same places. Why would anyone pay over three times as much for the same part?
