Just upgraded today from 2Mb, although its not working yet, spose I need to reboot my cable modem.
Can anyone tell us what sort of speeds you're getting? Is it anywhere close to 20 meg? I'm referring to the Virgin Media package.
Just out of interest really, I've already made the decision like!

Can't get cable where I live and fastest broadband I can get is 1.5 meg... Living in the country does have some downsides! >:( >:( :(
I wouldn't change it for the world though! :y :y
-
Cant get cable in the village where I am all though my girl friend has it in the next village down the dual carriage way.
I am getting just over a 6mb on an upto 8mb service but am close to the exchange, but am hoping to move to a quiet little village in the near futur and there's no cable there ad the broadband estimete seems to about 1.7 to 2.5 MB per second.
-
But at the moment speed isnt everything.
I would rather just have a stable but maxed/fast 2mb connection as when I was on that speed the service was far better than it is now.
-
i live next door to the BT Exchange and am getting 8128kbps
-
Just shows doesnt it.
I just checked on Google Earth. As the crow flies, I am 765 Yds away from the centre of the exchange. My house was built in 1977 and the cable comes into the house via a telegraph pole.

I have available ?? 20 meg with Vigin Broadband but best we ever get is 12meg.Spoke to Virgin and they say "it is upto 20 " so no gaurentee you will ever get it.But it is quicker than the 4 we used to have ,but not by much
-
Well if its been upgraded I'm still getting 1.9Mb according to the BBC...might be time for a modem reboot methinks.
Would love that, pay £7 more a month for the same speed, lol
I'll let you know how I got on.
And Lazydocker, yeah I would much rather be in the country, I'm in Macclesfield on a road with 2 pubs. Somehow the stench of manure seems mildly more attractive than stella piss. Only mildly mind! ;D

Still not bad though, fastest connection I've heard of until now...here's hoping eh

Ha 20 meg. I dream of getting Wi Fi 256k when Telefonica gets round to equipping our area which might be never. In the meantime I soldier on with 44k unlimited for which I pay the princely sum of 21 euros a month plus line rental.
Living in the sticks has its compensations though; 29 deg c today, lots of lovely sun, nice and quiet.

I have it and get between 18-20meg on it
one thing i would advise is make sure you tweak your TCP/IP settings as the standard settings in Windows is not really set up for those speeds.
One program i would recommend for this is from iobit (just google it)
they are currently beta testing the advanced windows care and it rocks.
you can tweak your setting in there by just adjusting the bar to say what speed you have.
I also work for VM shh
Edit:
also forgot use http://www.speedtest.net as it gives the best speed test results

i am just about to sign up for it !! :y
-
i've gt it and get between 13 and 19 meg normaly
-
No cable here.
But as with DSL, faster speeds often come with stability issues, which may or may not be an issue.

finally, at last your message has finished downloading
- no, I'm on a 300baud dial up modem. ;)
-
Interesting....just did a test on mine. Download=19209 Kb/s. Upload=733Kb/s. Thanx for the speedtest link :y
-
My upload was only 300 and down load 1200, guess that is not very good. :(
-
1228 Down.....386 Up; but always the same and a 'reliable' connection too.
No complaints really; I`m 12 Km from the exchange via 1960`s overhead copper-wire catenaries. :y
When I visit friends in Kent they live in-town (not that far from the exchange) and get barely half the service-speed I get.(contention issues, me-thinks!) :o
I find even my (moderate) ADSL speeds to be good for most`all my needs. ;)

Im supposed to be on Virgin Media's 8mg but its poo >:(

you have almost a 5 meg connection considering its over adsl that is not bad at all.
You would get the same or less with other providers,
btw link to the iobit program i mentioned before:
http://www.iobit.com/beta.html
its a nice program and play with the additional settings after clicking the big blue care button in the middle (its the last option that isn't run after the care the 6 o'clock position)
btw ignore my upload as i was sending a large email when i dd mine

I have a relative stable ADSL connection which runs at about 4600kbps, which isn't bad considering we're about 5km from the exchange. Every now and again, though, the throughput on the line gets throttled back to 135kbps, which is not much faster than dialup speed. I've been told that this happens if BT detect a number of line drops in a given period, and it will automatically reset itself in 72 hours.
It doesn't, though, so I have to ring the ISP call centre (in Mumbai) and argue with the morons on the other end of the line who generally don't want to report it to BT. Every time, we have to go through the same script - is your modem plugged into the master socket?, have you any other equipment plugged in?, have you run the BT speed test (which doesn't actually work once the line speed has dropped this low)?.
I'm a relatively calm sort of person, I don't panic and rarely lose my temper (except when Mrs. jereboam is navigating). This problem with the line speed, though, really gets me upset - I get chest pains and asthma attacks after having to deal with these clowns. These days, I tend to go on the attack from the start - if chummy won't listen, I go straight to the supervisor, and give him an earful.
Anyone else have this sort of problem?

JUst remember that its described as upto 20Mb broaband which means that you will have upto a 20Mb pipe from you to the exchange........not that you will get 20 Mb throughput.

I think we can all recollect having a dawdling dial-up and dreading the 'Windows Update' because it took 'HOURS'....terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired! :(
