I want to spend the minimum of time under the car (fat, awkward location, etc) so if anyone could tell me what size socket I need to for the level plug, that would save me a little aggro, please?
Ron.

13mm, according to the maintenance guide.....you'll find that in...maintenance guides.. ;D

Oi!

Unless.............like some of them (one of mine actually ::)), it's on so tight that the flats get rounded, so it gets reduced to 12mm! :y
-
Ron sorry I overlooked your Pm, I've had loads going on
What are the exact additives that are in the box?
-
Mine was on FT!!!!!
Get a 13mm six sided socket and medium sized breaker bar. That worked best for me. :)
-
Thanks for your comments, gents; very helpful as usual.
The plug shouldn't be as tight as the proverbial duck's arse as I've had my garage top up the ATF a few times recently (gearbox leak), but now I want to do it myself due to pension-limited finances!
I just wanted to have everything ready to hand so as to spend the minimum amount of time under the car.....

Don't forget to check the level with the engine running ;)
-
Thanks for the reminder, TG. What are the consequences of over-filling the gearbox? As my driveway isn't level, I can't guarantee to get the level right.

I can't see it been to much of a problem if its only a little over because iirc, the box does have a pressure vent pipe which ends up behind the engine somewhere :-\
Tbh, I did mine yesterday with the back end on 2 Halfords specials ramps and the front end up on a couple of stands with no problems to a fat barstid like myself ;D ;D
If you have the dosh for a couple of gallons of the oil, i'd drop the sumps, unbolt the filter (black plate with 3 13mm bolts) and give it a good clean with paraffin or some cheap white spirit first :y
I did all that to mine yesterday including dumping 2 gallon of hot gearbox oil on my head ;D ;D ;D
Cleaned the rubber seals up with some brake cleaner and smeared some instant gasket on the sump.
Put it back together and filled it up :y
Went for a drive this morning .............. no leaks and it changes gear much better :y :y

Thanks again, TG.
Is it an essential part of the procedure to anoint yourself with hot oil? I would like to follow your instructions to the letter, but if I could perhaps omit that stage?
According to my garage, the leak is coming from what looks like a blanking plate (but isn't) towards the rear of the bell-housing; does that sound reasonable?
Would replacing the ATF recondition the seals, as Wynn's and Lucas additives have not?
Sorry for all the questions.
Ron.

Is it AT that's leaking or is it engine oil from a fubar'd rear crank shaft seal? :-\

What's AT Andy? Is it ATF without the F?
-
Definitely ATF, Andy; after 2-3 weeks the gearbox starts to play up and requires a couple of litres of ATF to refill it!
The engine oil stays at the correct level throughout.

I think it is originally 1/2" which is close to 12,7 where a 13mm spanner will work and 12mm will work on a worn hex head. Not really sure but I remember always finding either 12 or 13mm being "not the correct" size. And, as the box is upgraded TH-200 autobox it will most probably have all bolts in imperial sizes.

BigRon, I totally understand why you don't want to spend mush time under the car. I would make two recommendations to you:
1.) Buy some very decent axel stands. It's so important to have confidence in them. I stupidly continued to use cheap axel stands for a long while and shit myself everytime I had to even put my arm under the car. I now have some very sturdy axel stands that I have complete faith in and have no qualms about going under for any period of time.
2.) Purchase specifically the Cuprinol Fence Sprayer (around £23 iirc) because that means you can pump the fluid in whilst having no part of your body under the car whilst topping up the fluid. Also the tubing fits absolutely perfectly in the hole left by the level plug. The only thing to be careful of (which I stupidly overlooked) was this: you'll pump fluid in and it of course will start to run out when it's full. However, pull the tube out and you've still lots of built up pressure in the sprayer so be prepared to very quickly plug the end of the tubing and undo the sprayer's pump handle to relieve the pressure. Otherwise you'll simply be covered in ATF as I was ::)
Hope this helps :y

Ok, thanks for your input Webby - time for an update:-
Today I tried to raise the car on my, admittedly, cheap trolley jack, the type with the separate release screw and it wouldn't lift the car off its front wheel so I could get an axle stand under. It just stopped, requiring more pumping force that I could manage! It said it was a 2 ton jack, so surely man enough?
I need to do this before a hospital appointment in the week, or pay the garage again.
I have a Hozelock garden sprayer of similar type to the one you mentioned, with a wand and trigger so if I ever get near to undoing the level I can squirt the ATF in a bit at a time and stop when it dribbles out.....
Ron.
P.S. Just in case any ladies get wxcited by my nickname on here, the "big" in BigRon refers to my belly!
