Title: turns over but won't start. no codes
Post by: Sebaz on 14 March 2014, 22:25:08
I have a 2001 Cadillac Catera and you guy are the only ones I know that may have an answer for me, nobody here knows how to fix it right. I was hoping for some help. The car will crank all I want it to in the driveway. I let it run for 30 minutes, cut it off and it will still crank. Let me go somewhere and it won't fire back up, call a tow truck, it cranks. It runs great if it starts. I checked it with a code reader and there are no codes. Will the paperclip trick yield something different? I first thought fuel pump and still haven't ruled it out, but I saw where a lot of people have trouble with the crank sensor. It's kicking my tail because no codes and it is intermittent. Doesn't matter if it is cold or not. drove it 15 minutes, it sat for 3 hours and wouldn't crank till the tow truck got there.

Thanks for any help

Assuming its the V6 variant .. cranksensor sounds favourite to me ... one of the few things that stops the V6 dead .. I carry a spare in the boot (trunk) purely as insurance ... easy enough to change BUT ensure you get genuine only, no pattern parts ... there is a guide that describes a "better" way of routing the cable ..

Thanks. I haven't changed this part yet, guess it lasted longer than normal.

Doesn't always give a code, but then not all code readers see the codes anyway.

Certainly do a paper clip test. But does sound like crank sensor.

Aren't the 3.0 US Cateras DBW? And will the paper clip test work on them?  :-\ Maybe the pedal test?  :-\ :-\

DBW? Drive by wire? Yes.  I changed the sensor, still early but no trouble yet.

The junkyard by my house usually has 3 Cateras and the bodies are in good shape. Check Salvage Hunter in Ga for the grill.

2000+F/L Cateras are indeed dbw, so pedal trick should work :y

Hopefully the replacement sensor sorts it :y best to treat the crank sensor as a 100k service item...

Guessing you're in Georgia, but even so, these guys might be of use to you... :-\

Have bought a couple of things from them, can't fault the service or their prices :y

Hi just had similar problem with my 3.2 elite on sat night, wife had been driving about in it all Saturday and came home parked up as normal, but when she went out again at 6.30 cranked over but would not start, checked about but couldn't see anything wrong, changed crank sensor next morning and car started first time, seems just failed out of the blue no warning, car does have 157k on it so I guess well over due according to Entwood's advice, thought I would pass on the findings from my sat evening, cheers Eric
